Zootopia 3 is a 2028 American 3D animated action comedy buddy cop film sequel to Zootopia 2. It was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard once again after their success from the second film with co-directed by Chris Buck. It was also written by Bush and Hans Zimmer. Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, Idris Elba, Nate Torrence, Patrick Warburton, Don Lake, Bonnie Hunt, Shakira, Alan Tudyk, David Strathairn, Quinta Brunson, Jenny Slate, J.K. Simmons, John Leguizamo and Danny Trejo reprise their roles from the first and second film with Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd, Stephen Curry, Larry the Cable Guy, Ben Schwartz, Charlie Cox, Terry Crews, Maya Hawke, Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, Beyoncé, Danny McBride, David Harbour, Hugh Jackman, Pedro Pascal, Alain Chabat, Robert Downer Jr, Bobby Cannavale, joining the cast. It is 68th animated feature in Disney Animated Canon and considered as the first highest grossest animated film in 2028 with the biggest cast and crew working together in filming. It is the third installment of the Zootopia franchise.
Synopsis[]
One year after the events from the second film, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde explore "Birds" "Fishes" "Invertebrates" and "Amphibians" across Zootopia, revealing twists and turns of the origins and the history of the bustling metropolis.
Plot[]
One year after the incarceration of the Lynxley family, Zootopia is now considered highly urbanized, the largest, and the most populous metropolis—especially after reptiles are officially welcomed as recognized citizens of the city. Many Zootopians are visiting the newly established Reptile Ravine District, known for its unique landmarks, particularly the new De Snake’s Manor with Agnes ‘De Snake’s monument, a site of deep historical significance that continues to shape Zootopia’s present. Mayor Brian Winddancer establishes the Zootopian Council of Senators, a political council in which politicians call themselves “senators” to foster collaboration and equality in creating laws for Zootopian society. Former mayor Lionheart is elected as a senator after being proven innocent by the court. Don Vespera, a descendant of Abigail Vespera—the first mayor of Zootopia, the writer of Zoo’s 100 Basic Laws & Principles, and the founder of the Rainforest District—is elected as the first Senate leader of the council.
Fast forward to the present day. Judy Hopps goes through her usual morning routine before arriving at ZPD headquarters, where she meets her partner, Nick Wilde. As they walk through the corridors together, Clawhauser is seen watching a Gazelle x Astra concert teaser on his phone. He informs Judy and Nick that they have been summoned by Chief Knuckles, the new chief of the ZPD, for a private meeting. At Knuckles’ office, they are assigned a new case involving a missing frog named Fred Croaks, a missing pike named Felix De'Pike, and a missing owl named Grayson Hooters,
Instead of attending Fuzzby’s therapy session, they go to their respective homes. Judy receives a phone call from her talkative parents, Stu and Bonnie, who ask about her day and her “fox partner” once again. After the lengthy call, while listening to her new favorite song, “Purple Rain,” Judy discovers a gray feather on her windowsill. She searches for articles and learns that birds once roamed Zootopia decades ago, but their clans went extinct after a plague devastated their town, Flock Square, as Antony Snootley appears as he Became Friends with Judy Hopps. Meanwhile, Nick is enjoying the TV series Stranger Beasts, a show embraced by the citywide obsession. He repeatedly declines Judy’s phone calls. Eventually, Judy goes to his apartment and tells him that birds may still be roaming Zootopia, despite having been declared extinct decades ago. Nick is skeptical until Judy shows him the feather she found. They discuss the history of birds in Zootopia until Gary De’Snake calls them to invite them to the Zootennial Mega Fashion Show, an event celebrating the 101st anniversary of Zootopia’s weather wall system.
Judy decides to attend the Zootennial with Nick, despite his reluctance. They drive to the new De Snake’s Manor, where the Mega Fashion Show is being held. Backstage, Judy and Nick steal fancy clothes and arrive late on the red carpet. They take their seats in the VIP area near the stage, where Agnes’ journal is displayed.
Everyone is invited, including Nibbles Maplestick, Mayor Winddancer and his wife Potts, the Vespera family, Gazelle, Astra, former Chief Bogo, Mr. and Mrs. Elkers, Chief Knuckles, and the ZPD troops. Gary greets Judy and Nick, wishing them a “happy ending.” As the dedication speech begins, Gary’s father, Hans De’Snake, is startled when a dragon stage prop suddenly malfunctions and begins moving across the stage. The prop collapses, revealing Pawbert Lynxley hiding beneath it as he steals Agnes’ journal once again. Judy chases him backstage, erupting chaos throughout the event. In the kitchen, Judy engages in a fight with Pawbert and briefly regains the journal. Nick soon joins her and knocks Pawbert out with a frying pan. However, Pawbert regains consciousness, steals the journal again, and escapes while Judy, Nick, and the ZPD troops pursue him unsuccessfully. News spreads that Agnes’ journal has gone missing after Pawbert successfully escapes during the Zootennial Mega Fashion Show. ZPD troops rescue the guests caught in the chaos. Chief Knuckles is furious with Judy and Nick for failing to apprehend Pawbert. Judy and Nick argue, with Judy accusing Nick of being selfish and careless. Nick retaliates, insisting he has never been selfish and accusing Judy of ignoring his suggestions and opinions. Nick storms off, leaving Judy devastated. She apologizes to Gary for failing to recover the journal.
The next day, Nick goes through his usual morning routine while repeatedly declining Judy’s calls. At ZPD headquarters, Judy approaches him and tearfully apologizes. As they walk through the corridors, Nick ignores her until he activates the Carrot Speaker, which cheerfully announces, “Love you, partner!” Judy hugs him, accidentally tossing the Carrot Speaker to Paul from the IT department. She apologizes softly to Paul and retrieves it. Reconciled, Nick agrees to help find Agnes’ journal and uncover the truth about the birds.
At the cafeteria, surrounded by scattered evidence, Judy theorizes that the gray feather she found and Pawbert’s theft of the journal are connected. Nick suggests forming a team by recruiting Nibbles and Gary. They also agree to keep their investigation low-profile and limit contact with Chief Knuckles and the ZPD while working independently.
At Gary’s house, Judy and Nick consult Nibbles and Gary about their plan to find the birds and recover Agnes’ journal once and for all. Nibbles suggests contacting her cousin on Outback Island, home of the Pina Koalas, who may have extensive knowledge about birds. Nibbles and Gary agree to help. At the airport, Lisa Shellshow slowly books their flight, much to Nick’s amusement and Judy’s impatience.
After a few hours, they land on Outback Island, where they are welcomed by the koalas as VIPs. Following directions from Zoogle Maps, they arrive at a secluded location and find a wooden cabin built from pencils. Nibbles knocks on the door and is greeted by her cousin, Brindle. Brindle reveals that birds did not go extinct but were instead exiled. She leads them to her backyard swamp, where she knocks on a wooden lily pad. Chomps Crocwood appears and drains the swamp, revealing a hidden entrance called the Secret Hole—an underground base where the Lost Flocks reside. Inside the Secret Hole, they encounter unique species, including birds, fish, and invertebrates. Nick is overwhelmed, while Judy, Gary, and Nibbles are amazed. Brindle introduces her talkative capybara friends, Harper and Hooper.
In the leader’s office, they meet Mr. Furryflow, a toucan and the leader of the Lost Flocks, who confirms Brindle’s claims. Judy expresses her desire to help. Their discussion is interrupted by Furryflow’s younger sister, Pinkette D’Wings, who reminds them of their duties. Gary and Nibbles head to the bar to relax with the birds, while Judy and Nick remain in the office. Suddenly, tranquilizers are released through the ventilation system, and despite Judy’s attempts to escape, she falls unconscious.
When Judy and Nick awaken, they are confronted by Greyson Hooters, Scarlet Nocturne, Brindle, Pinkette, and Mr. Furryflow, who suspect them of being government spies. Judy insists they want to help and ensure the birds’ peaceful return to Zootopia. Greyson reveals that the feather Judy found belonged to him. Pinkette assures them that Gary and Nibbles are safe and still enjoying themselves at the bar. Scarlet explains that birds were not extinct, only exiled. Decades ago, Scarlet’s great-grandfather, Franklin Nocturne, was inspired by Agnes’ work and wrote his own book titled Zoo’s 100 Basic Laws & Principles, which helped shape Zootopia’s political and economic systems. His wife, Abigail Vespera, betrayed him by stealing credit for the book. Franklin was framed by Abigail for murdering a neighbor—whom Abigail herself had killed. Abigail was honored as the author and became Zootopia’s first mayor, destroying Flock Square and expanding the Rainforest District. Franklin hid the original book inside a chest beneath the Giant Ant Tree.
Judy proposes forming a united team to locate the Giant Ant Tree, disable the Rainforest District’s weather wall system, and recover the hidden book once and for all. Nick suggests to call Flash for a back-up ride ahead to the Rainforest District's wall. They meet Flash with his girlfriend Priscilla and his cousin Ted. Judy, Nick, Gary, Nibbles, Scarlet, Brindle, Harper, and Hooper ride Flash's car until they reach Rainforest wall in one minute, creating a new record. As they divide into three teams and enter the wall system, an unseen creature is lurking over there.
