When Tylor Tuskmon arrives at Monsters Incorporated to begin his dream job as a Scarer, he discovers that scaring is out, and laughter is in. As a result, he is temporarily reassigned to MIFT, the Monsters Incorporated Facilities Team.
Plot[]
Tylor Tuskmon successfully graduates not just from Monsters University, but is informed by Professor Knight that he has also received an acceptance letter from Monsters, Inc. to become a scarer, much to his delight. Unbeknownst to him, Monsters, Inc. is going through some major changes as scare power has officially been made obsolete due to laugh power and H. J. Waternoose has been arrested following his conviction for child kidnapping. As everyone panics, Roz calls Mike and Sulley into Waternoose's old office to inform them that the Board has decided to promote Sulley to CEO and Mike as "Senior Co-President of Monsters, Incorporated and Chief Executive Vice-Deputy Administrative Director of Comedy Resources Management" (SCPOMICE-VDADOCREM). As Roz leaves, she informs the two that her twin sister Roze will be replacing her and Mike decides to promote his girlfriend Celia to Floor Manager.
Tylor arrives at Monsters, Inc. where he unknowingly does not realize that everything is changing. He is directed to the practice room by Celia to see Ms. Flint who is in the middle of trying to train the former scarers to being jokesters instead. Tylor is shocked by this and is sent to the orientation room where Mr. Crummyham attempts to explain that scare power is out and laugh power is in, but nearly falls flat through a now-obsolete training video. When Tylor mentions that his family scraped by in a hardware store so that he could go to Monsters University, Crummyham assigns him to work at the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT). He immediately encounters former acquaintance Val Little who had been working in MIFT since dropping out of college and takes him down to the MIFT offices which are located the basement of the factory.
Val introduces Tylor to Cutter, a sarcastic engineer, Duncan, the seedy assistant supervisor who thinks that everyone is after his job, Banana Bread, a raspberry blowing monster who is named so due to his habit of bringing said pastry, and their eccentric leader Fritz who takes great pride in his job. Tylor is immediately put off by their demeanor and flees. He looks over his acceptance letter and tosses it in the trash where an eavesdropping Needleman and Smitty indirectly suggest that he make an effort to try and be funny. Tylor goes down to the laugh floor where Mike and Sulley assume that he is one of the new jokesters and send him into one of the doors. Tylor however, fails miserably and the child ends up escaping into the facility as things begin to go awry. Tylor puts the child back and the door is forced to be shredded.
Tylor apologizes for causing such a mess, but Sulley recognizes him and reveals that he was the one who recommended him for the job. Knowing that he is one of the best, he suggests that Mike start a class within the Monsters, Inc. facility to help people like Tylor grow accustomed to the change in production. Mike ends up taking a liking to Tylor's statement of "It's Laughter We're After" and makes that the new company slogan. Roze, after giving Mike a fright, hands Tylor his new badge and helmet as the rest of MIFT arrive to help clean up the mess. Filled with purpose now, Tylor dutifully helps them. Afterwards, Tylor fishes his acceptance letter out of the trash and crosses out scarer to write in jokester.
The episode takes place one day after the events of the film but before the epilogue as the Laugh Floor has not become fully operational and Sulley has not yet reunited with Boo (as Mike hasn't yet reassembled her door).
This episode and "It's Laughter They're After", are the only ones that do not contain a Mike's Comedy Class sketch at the end.
Professor Knight tells Tylor that he scored higher in the scare simulator than Sulley did. However, Sulley never got to use the scare simulator in Monsters University. He is most likely referring to his scare record when he began working at the company.
While it has become news that humans cannot harm monsters, monsters are revealed to still have a hard time believing this.
On the newspaper that Needleman and Smitty are reading, there is an advertisement for "Home Creepot", a parody of Home Depot.
Mike and Sulley are revealed to have been banned from Harryhausen's due to the cause of Boo.
Professor Knight still teaches at Monsters University.
Roz officially leaves as, her undercover working is complete after Watternoose is exposed and arrested, and is succeeded by her twin sister Roze.
Fungus is shown to now assist Mike after Randall was booted out. Mike tells him that he missed an opportunity to ride in his car, a reference to the events of the movie where Mike tried to get out of his confines by offering this to him.
This is the first episode another kid visits the monster world rather than Boo.
The young boy that Tylor interacts with has a Winnie the Pooh plush doll and a Mickey Mouse shirt.
The Pooh plush toy could also be a reference to supervising director Stephen J. Anderson, who previously co-directed the 2011 Winnie the Pooh film.
On the boy's dresser is a signed photo from Pedro the mail plane from the short of the same name. The photo also reveals that the little boy's name is Miguel.
Tylor's address is shown to be "626 Croak Street", a reference to Stitch, and how the characters often found a frog throughout the course of Lilo & Stitch.
Mr. Waternoose is absent in person except being seen pictured from the original movie and is also mentioned.
The episode features a deleted scene where Tylor gives his valedictorian speech while his parents compliment him.
