The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, billed at the end of its final episode as Captain America and the Winter Soldier, is a web TV series, set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, centering on Falcon and the Winter Soldier.[1] It premiered on March 19, 2021, and is the second MCU series to be broadcast on the streaming service Disney+.
Synopsis[]
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios' The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.[2]
Plot[]
Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are both attempting to readjust to the world following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Sam continues to fly missions as the Falcon, but must also contend with his sister, Sarah, and his nephews who are at risk of selling their family fishing boat and losing their way of life as they are unable to afford much following everyone's return from the Blip. Bucky has started seeing therapy as he continues to have nightmares about his past life as the Winter Soldier, but refuses to cooperate. Things are made more difficult as he has befriended a man named Yori who had lost his son on a business trip. Unbeknownst to him, his son was murdered by Bucky during his Hydra years.
Sam turns down the chance to be Captain America; feeling that him taking up the shield is not right. A terrorist organization called the Flag Smashers, lead by Karli Morgenthau, appears with their intent to return the world to what it was during the Blip. Against Sam's wishes, the government creates a new Captain America with war veteran John Walker, who promises to do justice to the mantle. Angered, Sam and Bucky reunite to go and confront the Flag Smashers on their own, but Walker and his partner Lemar Hoskins (Battlestar) arrive to also confront them. Despite Walker's pleas that they should work together, Sam and Bucky refuse as they see him as a joke. Bucky, seeing the irony, reveals the identity of Isaiah Bradley to Sam. Isaiah was experimented on by the government, following Steve Rogers' success with the serum, and was traumatized by the experience to the point that he has become cynical about Captain America representing hope for anyone.
Over time, Sam and Bucky vent their frustrations on one another with Bucky disappointed that Sam would give up the shield; believing that it remains one of the last things that represented his old life with Steve while Sam felt he was doing the right thing by honoring him. Knowing that he would have the information they seek, they decide to break out Helmut Zemo from prison to help locate the source of the Flag Smashers' powers, as they possess the enhancements of the serum. They head to Madripoor where they reunite with Sharon Carter, who is still in hiding from the U.S. government. She takes them to see Wilfred Nagel to developed the serum, but Zemo kills him once they get their information. The three locate the information of Karli to her home in Riga, Latvia.
While there, Bucky is reunited with Ayo of the Wakandans who wants Zemo, but he manages to ask for more time with him. After getting local information, they run into Walker and Hoskins who force themselves to join their group. Upon locating Karli, Sam tries to talk with her, but an impatient Walker forces his way in, resulting in a fight with the Flag Smashers. Zemo manages to find the extra serum that Karli had and destroys them. However, Walker manages to save one, only for Karli and her group to escape. The Wakandans return to reclaim Zemo, but a fight breaks out among the heroes with Zemo escaping.
Karli threatens Sarah to draw out Sam and Bucky. Walker, who took the serum, and Hoskins arrive to fight Karli and the Flag Smashers, but during the commotion, Hoskins is killed, resulting in an unhinged Walker killing an innocent member of the Flag Smashers in front of horrified on lookers. Sam and Bucky chase and detain Walker before reclaiming the shield from him. Upon their return to the U.S., Walker is stripped of the Captain America name, but is approached by the mysterious Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine for a potential job opportunity. Bucky revisits Isaiah to know more about his history and he cynically tells him that no one will accept a black Captain America. Elsewhere, Bucky catches up with Zemo and turns him into the Wakandans before asking Ayo to make a new suit for Sam.
Sam and Bucky both recollect with Bucky realizing why Sam would turn down the shield and Sam telling him that he needs to make an effort to get closure. As Sam trains with the shield, he is informed by his friend Joaquin Torres that the Flag Smashers now plan to hit a GRC meeting, the people who relocated Karli and other refugees following everyone's return form the Blip. Sam, in his new suit, Bucky, Sharon and Walker, using a makeshift shield, all come together to fight the Flag Smashers who have teamed up with Georges Batroc. They prevent Karli's plan who attempts to flee, during which it is revealed that Sharon is the Power Broker, an underground criminal who gives powers to people, and that she had hired Batroc to tail her. Batroc is killed and Sam arrives to stop Karli, who in turn is killed by Sharon. Sam, now the new Captain America, confronts the GRC and demands they take responsibility. The remaining Flag Smashers are bombed by Zemo's butler while he is in prison.
Walker is hired by Valentina and given the new name of U.S. Agent. Bucky tells Yori the truth and gives his journal back to his therapist while Sam sees Isaiah and brings him and his grandson Eli to the Captain America museum to see a new exhibit dedicated to Isaiah's history. Sam and Bucky celebrate with friends and family as they look forward to their new future. Sharon is pardoned by the U.S. government and now plans to use her new position to continue her efforts as the Power Broker.

Production[]
It was announced that John Wick creator, Derek Kolstad, had joined Malcolm Spellman for the writing team in the limited series.[3]
In August 2019, it was reported that the series will start production on October 22, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia.[4] Filming began on October 31 of that year, in Atlanta, Georgia, under the working title "Tag Team", and wrapped scenes there in February 2020. Planned filming in Puerto Rico was interrupted by earthquakes in mid-January, 2020, and it remained unknown if the site would be returned to for filming. Production moved to Prague in the Czech Republic in March, where they expected to film for three weeks, but that was also interrupted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Filming locations resumed in August 2020, after being shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming wrapped on October 23, 2020.
As a promotion, from March 19, 2021 to April 02, 2021, the Avenida America Station (Madrid, Spain) was named Avenida Capitán America.
