Star Wars Battlefront is a 2015 action shooter video game developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game was introduced at Electronic Arts' E3 press conference on June 10, 2013. It was released on November 17, 2015, in North America and November 20, 2015, in the UK for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Following the original Battlefront in 2004 and Battlefront II in 2005, this is the third major entry in the Star Wars: Battlefront video game series, and is considered a reboot of the series rather than a sequel. Though released amongst the publicity surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the game is set within the timeframe of the Star Wars original trilogy.

Star Wars Battlefront has received mixed reviews, with praise towards the game's visual loyalty to the Star Wars series, and criticism largely directed at repetitive gameplay and the lack of a single-player campaign.

Overview[]

Battlefront is an action shooter video game with emphasis on online multiplayer battles, supporting up to 40 players simultaneously. In the game's initial release, maps set on Tatooine, Hoth, Endor, and Sullust were included, with Jakku later added as free downloadable content. Future locations to be available as downloadable content include Jabba's Palace, the Death Star, and Cloud City. In the game, players can control either a Rebel soldier or Imperial Stormtrooper, as well as control vehicles or heroes from their respective factions. Playable heroes include Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Boba Fett. Pilotable vehicles include X-wing starfighters, A-wing starfighters, T-47 airspeeders, the Millennium Falcon, TIE fighters, TIE Interceptors, AT-ATs, AT-STs, the Slave I, and speeder bikes.

Development[]

In May 2013, publisher/developer Electronic Arts obtained exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games for consoles and PC, and subsidiaries including DICE, Visceral Games, and BioWare started developing Star Wars games. At Electronic Arts' E3 2013 press conference, DICE unveiled a teaser trailer for a game titled Star Wars: Battlefront, featuring footage of a battle set on Hoth. The game will be built with the Frostbite 3 engine; studio head Patrick Söderlund stated that the game would be "DICE's interpretation of what Battlefront should be", but would still incorporate elements from the previous two games. As such, DICE did not brand the new game as a sequel to Battlefront II, but a re-launch of the franchise. Söderlund said that the new Battlefront game almost wasn't developed, but that staffers at DICE lobbied to be given the project. He called DICE's development of Battlefront "a match made in heaven".
