Samson is the protagonist from Disney's 2006 animated feature film The Wild and its 2023 sequel. He's an adult lion who grew up in a circus with his father Judah and was shipped to Central Park Zoo where he started a family with his wife Galena and his cubs Ryan and Nani.
Background[]
Physical appearances[]
Samson is a slender lion, with yellow-golden fur and paws, white underbelly, tipped ears, claws, pink nose, white teeth, brown mane and brown eyes. In the sequel, Samson's appearances are seen to be more brighter like in other animated movies. His fur is golden and has a cream-colored underbelly, a pink nose, tipped ears and reddish eyes.
Personality[]
As a cub, Samson was very nervous and scared in the circus where he was about to show his roar. But after failing to show his roar and meowed instead, he was very sad after disappointing his father Judah, and cried after sending him away to New York, Central Park Zoo.
As an adult, Samson started to become very fatherly and protective to his son Ryan. But when he was telling him stories of his past which was just a lie, he pretend to be very fearless and brave lion who faced off with Wildebeests. For real he is very scared and fearful, due to not growing up in the Wild. But after getting lessons from his best friend Benny, Sammy finally learns how to become a real lion, be hiding his fear and faces off with the Wildebeests' leader Kazar, and finally learned how to dig deep and roar louder.
Appearances[]
The Wild[]
Samson is very devoted to his zoo friends Benny, Bridget, Nigel, Larry, and son, Ryan. Samson is kind and loving and enjoys telling Ryan stories about the wild, though none of them were actually true. Samson was born in the circus as a cub. He was very timid back then and was unable to roar, much like his son. After failing to roar at a mechanical wildebeest, Judah told him that a wild lion could roar before allowing Samson to be shipped to the New York Zoo. This proves that Samson was not from the wild, which he kept secret from everyone except Benny. However, he eventually reveals this to the others and Ryan during the film's climax. At one point, Samson gets pushed off a cliff by Kazar's wildebeest henchmen, but he survives the fall and eventually finds Ryan with help from two chameleons named Cloak and Camo. With some motivation from his son, Samson digs deep down and uses his mighty roar to defeat Kazar, the leader of the wildebeests. He then rescues Ryan, and all the animals (including Kazar's former minions) head home on a boat that Samson had previously hijacked.
The Wild: Southern[]
After almost five years from the previous film, Samson continues living in the Central Park Zoo with Ryan and his friends.
Trivia[]
- Apparently, and according to some concept arts, the original name for the character was Alexander, but the name was already used and shortened as "Alex" for the lion protagonist of DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar franchise.
- Samson's name is a reference to the lion that the Biblical figure of the same name fought and killed in the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah.
