This article is about the character from Ratatouille. For the character from the Lilo & Stitch franchise or Cricket Green's best friend, see Remmy or Remy Remington, respectively.

This is me. I think it's apparent that I need to rethink my life a little bit. What's my problem? First of all, I'm a rat. Which means life is hard. And second, I have a highly developed sense of taste and smell.
―Remy

Remy (also known as Little Chef) is the protagonist of DisneyPixar's 2007 animated feature film Ratatouille. He is a bluish-gray rat from Paris with a passion for food, and dreams of becoming a professional chef.

Background[]

Personality[]

Remy is a rat who simply adores food and its quality. He befriends a spectral representation of his hero, the late Auguste Gusteau. Due to his love for food, he has a strong sense of smell, and his father, Django, appoints him as an inspector amongst the rat's clan after Remy stops him from eating a poisoned apple core so that the rats will no longer die from accidentally eating toxic food. Remy's gift with food allows him to be able to identify the different ingredients in a dish, and he always tries his best to make delicious high-quality food. He also has an interest in humans, due to how they prepare food in such an exquisite manner, and soon becomes quite close to one particular human, Alfredo Linguini, who affectionately calls him "Little Chef" and cannot cook.

He is not a typical rat, and his personality is more like that of a human, as he walks on two feet instead of four because he doesn't like the idea of his paws touching both the ground and the food he eats. What he thinks of his talent is a bit of modesty, as shown when Linguini asked him if he could actually cook. Towards the fact that he is not really a typical rat, this concerns his father excessively, and always ends up in an argument with him to do with his ways.

His overall dream is to become a chef. He is incredibly skilled and talented in cooking (possibly beyond the likes of Gusteau), never failing to impress diners (including feared top food critic Anton Ego) with his excellent quality dishes, to the point that Linguini (who is controlled by Remy) becomes the star chef of the restaurant.

At the end of Ratatouille, Remy's dream comes true in which he becomes the head chef at the La Ratatouille bistro in Paris.

Remy at the beginning of the story while the screen freezes when he runs away with Gusteau's book (also narrating the story).

In the beginning of the film, it is revealed that Remy possesses a very strong sense of smell, able to deduce various ingredients in food. His brother, Emile is readily impressed, while his father, rat clan chief, is not but pleased when Remy is assigned as rat poison checker when he almost ate a poisoned apple core, sniffing every bit of garbage for poison, despite the fact that job is essential for the survival of the rat clan. Remy's father is also annoyed about Remy's attitude towards eating garbage, Remy claims that is unhealthy for rats and they ought to try to take the good food found in the kitchens and pantries of the humans. Therefore, Remy makes constant forages to the nearest kitchen, in an old lady's house in the countryside, where the clan is also located. Remy is also able to learn to read and understand the human language. Remy idolizes the famed chef, Auguste Gusteau, with his motto: "Anyone can cook!"

With his sense of smell, Remy slowly realizes how to improve food by combining tastes together. One day, he and his brother Emile were smoking a mushroom by the chimney, before being struck by a flash of lightning. Impressed by the popcorned mushroom, the two venture into the kitchen for saffron. The old lady is asleep, but a TV is on where Remy hears the news that Gusteau has died. The old lady awakes sees the rats, and promptly produces a shotgun where she blasts the walls and roof. Her inaccurate shooting, however, brings down part of the ceiling where the entire rat clan lives. Remy's father calls for a Dunquerque style evacuation, fleeing out to a stream and paddling off on rubbish. Remy runs back to grab a Gusteau cookbook and flees, trailing behind.

He paddles into the stream, under fire from the old lady but loses sight of the clan in the sewers. The sewers contained rapids and displaying incredible water physics, Remy is alone. Absentmindedly, Remy flicks through his cookbook's pages where an illustration of Gusteau comes to life, animated by Remy's lonely imagination. Gusteau instructs Remy to go out and look for food, Remy complies and witnesses aspects of Parisian life before surveying the magnificent night scenery and finding himself located right next to Gusteau's restaurant.

Remy climbs onto the restaurant's skylight and sees the working of a quality kitchen, where he witnesses Linguini, a clumsy garbage boy, spill a pot of soup and stuff water and various random ingredients to make up for it. Remy is horrified by this sacrilege to good food and falls from the skylight.

Almost getting roast, cooked, chopped and seen, Remy gets to the soup undetected and was about to make good his escape via an open window. He halts and then proceeds to add ingredients into the soup, and was caught red-handed by a stunned Linguini. Remy was hastily hidden away when the restaurant's new owner Skinner sees a soup ladle in Linguini's hand and berate him for cooking. The soup is served to Linguini's dismay but proved popular to a critic. Remy, pleased, was about to escape but was caught. Linguini was told to hastily dispose of him, trapped in a jar, and he cycled to the River Seine to dump him.

Linguini was about to drop Remy but desists, noticing that Remy could understand him talking. Linguini quickly figures out that he can not cook, while Remy can. Linguini releases him and takes Remy into his apartment. There Remy learns a way to work with Linguini to cook while Remy can remain covertly hidden which is to use Linguini's hair to control Linguini like a puppet.

Remy helps Linguini recreate the soup to prove to Skinner that the success was not a fluke on Linguini's part but Remy's talents remain anonymous. When Skinner sees the soup he gives Linguini the cooking job but still is suspicious wondering where Linguini suddenly got his new talents. While seeing Linguini work he sometimes spots Remy with him but when he looks again Remy has vanished deeply confusing Skinner. Both Linguini and Remy are unaware that Skinner has been spying on Linguini and secretly taking some of Linguini's hairs for his lawyer to examine due to the fact that Linguini is Gusteau's son and the owner of the restaurant. This would challenge Skinner's hopes to continue his new frozen food line used in Gusteau's image.

When Remy learns this revelation, he steals the documents but in return is chased by Skinner. Remy climbs aboard a boat but Skinner refuses to lose and pursues Remy boat by boat ending with Skinner accidentally falling into the canal when jumping between two boats, and seeing Remy run back to the restaurant with the documents. Later that day, Skinner loses the restaurant's business interests, and with it the restaurant and frozen food lines. Linguini takes control as the rightful owner and Skinner either is fired or resigns not wanting to work under Linguini. Linguini also provides Remy with a new wonderful posh apartment to live in with him.

One night, Remy unexpectedly reunites with his family who believed him to have died in the rapids of the sewers. Django asks Remy to stay but Remy shows his loyalty to Linguini having bonded with his new human friend while being absent from his rat colony.

However, Remy gets confused when he sees Linguini bonding with Colette, the only woman cook in the kitchen, and crediting his talents to her. Remy gets attention from Linguini and gives him a wake-up call reminding him of Remy' true part in the cooking. However, Linguini is unconvinced in it and throws Remy out. In retaliation, Remy lets his family raid the kitchen one night but Linguini, wanting to reconcile accidentally discovers them and angrily throws them out.

Remy is so guilty that he again ditches the family to think about what to do now, at the apartment. The news then breaks out that one of Gusteau's mortal rivals; food critic Anton Ego who gave Gusteau's a scathing review in the past that eventually resulted in Gusteau's death; will come again to review the restaurant. The next evening, Remy tries to wait for the perfect moment to help Linguini or try to reconcile but is captured by Skinner who uses blackmail to order Remy to create a new successful frozen foods line. Emile sees what has happened and brings Django to help him free Remy from Skinner's limousine. Linguini realizes that he cannot work on the food without Remy and when Remy returns Linguini is so happy to see him again that he is forced to admit to the staff the truth. In reply, the staff all walk out of the restaurant, feeling deceived and betrayed by Linguini. Colette initially quits her job also, but returns when remembering her idol Gusteau's motto: Anyone Can Cook.

With help from Remy's colony, Linguini, Colette, and Remy present to Anton Ego and a disguised Skinner a version of an ancient dish, ratatouille. Anton Ego loves it when realizing that his mother made it for him when younger and now a changed man, Ego asks for the chef to thank for the dish. When Skinner sees that Ego is impressed, he tastes it and when trying to find out who cooked it, he finds out that Remy's rat colony did it. Skinner is then locked in the room with a health inspector Skinner had previously summoned. Ego is told to wait until all customers have left, to see the chef that made it. Hours later, they reveal Remy to Ego. At first, Ego thinks they are joking but when they explain and demonstrate it, a stunned Ego thanks them, walks back home and writes a wonderful review, praising the restaurant.

The next morning, Ego puts his review in the newspaper, but because Skinner and the Health Inspector had to be freed, word got out there were rats in the kitchen, leading the restaurant to be closed and Ego to lose his job and his credibility due to praising a restaurant infested by a horde of rats.

Although very disappointed to lose a very successful, legendary restaurant to Skinner and the Health Department, Remy, Linguini and Colette take it well and to recover from their business collapsing, they buy out a new building and there they start a new restaurant modeled after Gusteau's called La Ratatouille to continue the Gusteau legacy. Ego becomes a small business investor and helps Linguini and Colette fund the restaurant with Linguini as the waiter, Remy as the head chef, Colette as the sous-chef, and Ego as the sponsor. The rats are then shown hidden in the restaurant at a vantage point, enjoying some food as Remy is telling them the whole story. A female rat (possibly Celine from the Video Game as this rat was seen twice in the film) asks how he knows, which he explains later and he is last seen observing.

Your Friend the Rat[]

In the animated comedy short, Remy and Emile teach the viewers about the history of the rat in order to bring a better understanding between the two species.

Other appearances[]

Remy makes a cameo appearance in Inside Out as the dead mouse inside Riley Andersen's new home in San Francisco. Oddly enough, he is a rat, not a mouse.

Remy also makes a cameo in the LEGO Frozen Northern Lights movie as a rat serving ratatouille for Kristoff.

Remy can also be seen as one of the chefs working at the Manticore's Tavern in Onward.

Remy makes a cameo in the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur episode "Teacher's Pet" inside a text bubble as Moon Girl mentions Ratatouille while observing the Rat King's rats assault a pizza store.

Live-action appearances[]

Once Upon a Time[]

Remy, portrayed by Trevor Roberts, appears in human form in the seventh season, as the caterer hired by Victoria Belfrey and later an employee at Roni's bar. Knowing that other animals like Jiminy Cricket and Gus were transformed into humans by the curse in the show, it was possibly effective for Remy as well. In the episode "Homecoming", Remy mentions an incidence before the curse where he was preparing a cassoulet, a reference to him being a chef in France in the Pixar film.

Video games[]

Kinect Rush: A Disney/Pixar Adventure[]

Remy appears as a mission giver for the player.

Kingdom Hearts III[]

Remy appears in the game as a minigame-exclusive character, working at a restaurant owned by Scrooge McDuck in Twilight Town, called Le Grand Bistro. He is playable inside the minigame "Remy's Delicious Restaurant". When Sora collects enough ingredients on his journey, he can take them to Remy to help Sora cook a full-course meal. Succeeding in making the meal with Remy increases Sora's stats for a duration.

Just like in the original film, he is only referred to as "Little Chef" by the other characters, including Scrooge McDuck.

LEGO The Incredibles[]

When Linguini is unlocked, he can be used to summon Remy for traveling through small pipes.

Disney Magic Kingdoms[]

Remy appears as a playable character to unlock during the progress of the game's main storyline.

Disney Heroes: Battle Mode[]

Remy appears with Linguini in the game, his silhouette is seen in the Linguini hat during the rest of each battle, during the Linguini victory pose he is physically seen when Linguini gives him some food.

Disney Dreamlight Valley[]

Remy appears in this game, even in early release, having retreated to his restaurant in his home realm to escape The Forgetting plaguing Dreamlight Valley. If his realm is not initially opened for free by the player and Merlin once they unlock the Dream Castle, it will require 3,000 Dreamlight to remove the Night Thorns blocking his door to gain access to it later. Once in Remy's kitchen, he asks the player for help with dealing with several meals and demonstrating their cooking skill for him, allowing a way for the player to learn a few new recipes with Remy without the need of using the recipe books found back in the valley through digging or checking various furniture in the residents' houses for them to unlock them that way, as Remy has an unlimited number of ingredients in his realm kitchen to unlock several of the recipes available for entrées, appetizers, and desserts. After helping Remy deal with a food critic that was coming to check the restaurant out, possibly Ego, Remy agrees to return to Dreamlight Valley, trusting that Linguini and Colette can handle things at La Ratatouille without him for a while.

Once Remy's house is built with support from Scrooge McDuck's construction firm, Remy will arrive in the valley, and see to reopening the Chez Remy restaurant for the other characters to dine at, needing both a restaurant repair kit from Scrooge, and various food items that the player can either collect from around the valley or buy from Goofy's stalls to help refurbish it, including carrots, wheat, oregano, and raspberries. Once the restaurant is reopened, the player can pay Scrooge's construction firm to further improve it to allow more characters to dine there at once thanks to there being more tables to sit at, and the player can help Remy cook up their orders to further improve their friendship levels with the characters. Remy is also the only means to acquire milk, eggs, butter, and cheese for recipes, and after doing friendship quests for him upon getting his friendship level to certain points, having the respective biomes unlocked, and made certain progress with other characters as well, peanuts and slush ice as well, as completing the friendship quests will unlock those items in his pantry at Chez Remy to help unlock the rest of the recipes that require them so players can unlock their full cookbook with all the biomes and Chez Remy's pantry fully unlocked.

Remy is also necessary for several other friendship quests for other characters, such as helping Prince Eric provide a means for Ariel to gain her human form so she can walk around the valley on her human legs rather than swim around in her mermaid form, or helping Mirabel remember the recipe for a meal she wanted to make again for the other residents of the Valley.

A recent update to the game has the player finding a bundle of Remy's supplies in the Forest of Valor, and upon returning them to him, he asks them to whip up some 5-star meals to give to Mickey, Merlin, Goofy, and Scrooge as thanks for their efforts in taking care of Dreamlight Valley in his and the other characters' absence because of The Forgetting.

If the player cooks up any food using the kitchen in Chez Remy, or back in his realm, even after unlocking him, Remy will join them to oversee their work, and his reactions will indicate how well the player is doing with adding the right ingredients into the meal, sniffing the tasty fumes once the first ingredient is put in, and raising his hands into the air in celebration once the player has fulfilled the requirements for a meal, be it an appetizer, entrée, or dessert, especially the higher-starred meals.

Trivia[]

  • Remy was listed #41 in Empire Magazine's The 50 Best Animated Movie Characters.
  • In WALL-E, a tribute to Remy is shown as a robot named REM-E, shown onboard the Axiom inside the garbage chute.
  • Remy has 1,150,070 individual hairs on his body.
  • In the French version of the film, Chef Gusteau says "Tu as un rat. Il s'appelle Remy. Remy est une grande Cuisiner. Remy aime les croutons" which was removed from the English versions of the film due to censors.
  • Patton Oswalt ad-libbed a few of his lines, such as Remy's excited rambles ("Bam, bam, bam!") over the cooking of the mushroom, and when Remy orders the rats to prepare some food in Gusteau's kitchen (the line: "Work it, stick and move."). This is his second voiceover work for Disney after voicing Professor Dementor in episodes of Kim Possible. A little bit of his "Dementor" voice can be heard during Remy's glee over the cooked mushroom.
  • He is the third Disney rat character to be a protagonist, the first being Snitch from Bonkers, the second being Ratso from The Brave Little Toaster to the Rescue.
  • Rats cannot vomit, so when Remy nearly throws up from the soup made by Linguini, indicating how bad the soup really is to even define the law of nature.
