Neci Eason is the main protagonist of The Pauperess. A regular-wealthed girl working as a waitress for her grandmother's diner, living with her family and three dogs. Neci started robbing rich people at night diguised as a mysterious shadow maiden called the Pauperess after her enemy Marion started tormenting everyone poor or regular-wealthed.

When Neci was in first grade in 1953, her spoiled rival, Marion Grant, stole her personal journal and read her secrets to the class. A week after getting her book back, her classmates (all led by Marion) started to torment her everyday and Neci would always come home from school with bruises. Tired of their daugther being tortured all the time and the other children's parents not doing anything (as they all called their children "angels"), Neci's parents decided to move to another town. During her last days in Madison, Neci bought three dogs to make sure everything her family owned was guarded in their new town, two days later Neci and her family moved tin with her maternal grandmother in Salisbury.
Ten years later, Neci became a waitress at her grandma's diner, and became a big sister to her two year old sister Dawn, started a new school, and usally only talks to either her dogs, Payne, Dalton, and Hearst or her relatives. Neci deeply thinks that Marion and her former classmates might find her.
