I've changed a lot since I started hanging out with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. I know I can do this by myself!
―Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic Adventure[1]

Miles Prower (マイルス・パウアー Mairusu Pauā?, lit. "Miles Pouer"), better known by his nickname, Tails (テイルス Teirusu?), is a fictional character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic fox cub born with two distinct twin-tails, hence his nickname. Because of his abnormality, Tails was a victim to bullying during his youth. One day, however, he met Sonic the Hedgehog and was inspired to become as cool as him after seeing him run like the wind. Tails soon after began following Sonic on his adventures and has since become his best friend and sidekick. He is able to use his twin-tails to fly by rotating them like helicopter rotors and is a mechanic genius and aerial pilot.

A gentle and sweet-natured soul, Tails was initially timid and lacked courage. After meeting Sonic, however, Tails has become more confident, eventually growing into a more outgoing, brave, independent individual and a hero in his own right. Since encountering Sonic, Tails has looked up to him and stood by his side, helping him whenever he can during their adventures.

Concept and creation[]

Tails' original appearance

The concept of Tails was founded during the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. After some discussion about making a sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), a fraction of the Sonic Team went to work with Sega of America's Sega Technical Institute. A new element they wanted to introduce was a character that would both serve as a companion to Sonic the Hedgehog and hopefully draw the attention of new players to the franchise.

A contest was held at STI in which Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the main artist and zone designer for Sega's Sonic Team, won. The character was meant to hold a "deep admiration for Sonic."[2] The name 'Miles Prower' is a play by play word on a measurement of speed (miles per hour). Yamaguchi's entry won but Sonic Team decided to change his character's name from "Miles" to "Tails" in which Yamaguchi was not too pleased with at all about. The team and Yamaguchi ended up with a compromise: he settled the name "Miles" in as his legal name; "Tails" would be his nickname, ending up with the full name of Miles "Tails" Prower.

Yuji Naka has stated that the character was originally intended to be a tanuki (a raccoon-like canine native to East Asia and extremely popular in Japanese folklore), who had been modeled after a UFO catcher plushie.[3] However, Yasushi Yamaguchi has stated that was misinformation regarding a different project, and Tails was intended to be a fox from the beginning.[4] Tails received his twin-tails to grow more of a personality.[3]

During the design process, Tails was originally not going to have sclera, only completely black, round eyes and a single tail. Yasushi Yamaguchi also created Tails with the image of him being five years old, despite his official age ending up being eight. Despite Tails' three bangs usually being depicted erupting from the middle of his head, his creator intended them to be coming from the right side.[4]

The character debuted as Sonic's tag-along partner in the franchise's second game, and has remained an important character. However Tails' uniqueness was not established until Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when players were allowed to control his flying.[5]

Tails was redesigned (along with the rest of the Sonic cast of characters) by Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Adventure. Tails' redesign saw him having his fur color changed to an amber like color, gained visible blue irises, became slightly slimmer and received a small boost in height. He shifted to a more streamlined appearance with rounded ears at the tips as well as longer tails which are used as his main form of attack, most notably the Tail Swipe.

Appearance[]

Tails 29

Tails, from Sonic Advance 3.

Tails is a young, anthropomorphic fox cub with a unique genetic mutation giving him two tails instead of one. He has mostly yellow-orange fur with white fur around his muzzle, front torso, and the tips of his tails. He also has blue eyes, triangular ears with white canals and three locks of hair on his forehead. Typically, his attire consists simply of white gloves, and shoes that are red from the heel to the middle, and white from the middle to the toe with gray soles.

Personality[]

Sonic Jam

Tails' profile in Sonic Jam.

Tails is a gentle-hearted, sweet-natured and loyal fox with a positive attitude.[6] In the beginning, he was timid and quiet,[7] but he has opened up and become more outgoing over the years. Tails is not one to grab the spotlight for himself and instead, is always ready and willing to help others without asking for anything in return.

Tails has a distinct love for mechanics and he finds himself most at home in his workshop working on his next creation. Despite his great skills, Tails is very humble about his abilities,[8] never giving them many thoughts, though he has yet to discover his true potential of what he can accomplish.[9] At the time of Sonic Lost World, Tails has become more confident and outspoken about his intelligence, though he still does not openly brag. Regardless, he has been known to mock Eggman's own creations, and sometimes Eggman himself.

When young, Tails often lacked self-confidence and courage. After meeting Sonic and gaining his support, Tails gained more confidence and belief in himself. However, this status quo, created from Sonic's authority over him, initially placed a mental stranglehold on Tails that made him dependent on Sonic. As such, he often lacked initiative and confidence when alone.

A turning point for Tails came in Sonic Adventure; when Station Square was in danger of being destroyed, Tails was the only one who could stop this. With Sonic nowhere to be found, Tails realized that he could not depend on Sonic forever and had to try on his own. After saving Station Square, Tails realized he could be independent and support himself without Sonic, and all he needed was determination and faith. Since then, Tails has become more independent, self-confident, motivated and brave, as well as rising up to be a real hero when needed.

Tails profile SG

Tails' profile in Sonic Generations.

During their earlier adventures together, Tails strove to become just like Sonic by replicating the mannerisms he found admirable. In this period, Tails was content with being Sonic's sidekick as he was just happy to hang out with Sonic. As Tails grew as a person, he would still remain as close to Sonic as ever and look up to him as he has always done, but his esteem about Sonic's heroics have dwindled, as he these days cares more about inventing than Sonic's heroic deeds.

Despite his development, Tails still tends to depend on Sonic when he is in a moment of weakness. However, he hopes to one day be self-sufficient and independent like Sonic to prove he can be relied upon.[9] Also, even though Tails still enjoys being Sonic's sidekick, he believes that he can do almost anything if he puts his mind to it.

Despite his intelligence and general fearlessness, Tails is afraid of lightning and can be naive and big mouthed, such as in Sonic Adventure 2 when he accidentally confirmed Eggman's suspicions that the Chaos Emerald that Sonic had was a fake, thus ruining the heroes' plans. Tails also hates feeling useless or being ignored, as seen in the cases when he is talking to Sonic. He also gets very angry when someone insults his mechanical skills and takes it very personally, as seen when Wave the Swallow mocked his self-customized Blue Star.

Tails has a tendency to talk techno-babble, much to the irritation of his friends, such as when he tried to explain how an Extreme Gear worked, meaning that Tails does not always use tact in a situational matter. Nevertheless, Tails is supportive of his friends, willing to be by their side no matter how dangerous the situation might be, and will do whatever it takes to help them, even if it means sacrificing himself for them.

Powers and abilities[]

Though not as much on the forefront in battles as other characters, Tails is still an accomplished fighter. On his own, he has defeated several of Dr. Eggman robots and combat mechs, and even single-handedly defeated the entire Battle Bird Armada and Witchcart's gang. Once, he was also able to go head-to-head with Knuckles the Echidna.

Tails using his two tails to keep up with Sonic.

Due to a genetic abnormality, Tails is bequeathed with two large, fluffy tails that can twirl together. Over time, Tails has learned to use them to his advantage in many situations. Most noticeably, Tails can spin his twin-tails like rotary blades to fly or hover like a helicopter. While in flight, Tails can move around with outstanding agility and enough speed to keep up with even Sonic,[10] who can run 768 mph at average. However, he gets fatigued if he uses them to stay in flight for too long.

Vlc 2016-09-26 23-36-44-159

Tails holding a toothpick with his tail.

By manipulating the curvature of his twin-tails, Tails can glide through midair. He can also use his twin-tails as a rear turbine to sail across the ground at speeds great enough to let him stand a chance against Sonic in a race. By using them in said manner underwater, Tails' twin-tails become rear propellers that let him move around underwater with ease. Tails' twin-tails are also quite powerful limbs, being both strong and fast enough to slice through metal, and highly prehensile, having once grabbed a toothpick from a sandwich by their tip and then used it to type on a keyboard.

Even without his twin-tails, Tails can move at exceptionally high speeds. He is able to keep up with Sonic's speed on foot[11] and even once cut Sonic off repeatedly using extremely swift movements.[12] With or without his twin-tails though, Tails' speed still is considered average by comparison[13] and he has admitted in spite of his feats that he is still slower than Sonic.[14] Tails is also quite physically strong, having enough strength to hold up both Sonic and Knuckles at once and move blocks that supposedly weights several tons. He is also tough enough to go through atmospheric reentry and then land on the ground unharmed.[15] In addition, Tails has demonstrated great feats of acrobatic skills and agility, he can effortlessly grind on rails and pull off different acrobatic tricks while airborne. He is also good at swimming.

Tails has also demonstrated the ability to harness chaos energy for his own use, although this is an ability he uses sparingly. By harnessing the Chaos Emeralds, Tails can give himself a boost in power.[16][17]

Tails possesses a genius-level intellect and is a skilled inventor. Described as a mechanical genius and a natural prodigy in this field,[6][18] Tails is as talented as Dr. Eggman,[8][9] who has an IQ of 300. Tails even once claimed he is smart enough to build a TV out of paperclips and reprogram a supercomputer using a toothpick and dishwashing detergent. As a testament to his skills, when presented with foreign technology (even of the advanced kind), Tails only needs to take a few looks to understand it.[19][20] He is likewise quick to grasp new forms of technology, and once he develops an understanding of it, he excels at said technology.[21] Tails also has a knack for building things, to the point that his friends believe that there is nothing he cannot built.[9][22] Over time, Tails has created a number of inventions that often have gotten both him and Sonic out of trouble and let them stay just ahead of Eggman's schemes. These creations include his transformable Tornado series of airplanes, his combat equipment, his Emerald Detector, the Sea Fox, the Lunar Fox, a fake Chaos Emerald and his multifunctional Miles Electric to name a few. Among the different fields of his expertise, Tails is also a capable Extreme Gear mechanic who can create, customize and tune Gears. Though he is Wave the Swallow's lesser as an Extreme Gear mechanic,[23] his skills are still good enough to impress Wave,[24] which is a considerable feat.

While mechanics are his specialty, Tails is also well-versed in physics and science, enough to come up with solid theories regarding matters as complex as time and space.[25][26] Combined with his mechanical skills, Tails can construct different vessels that can travel between dimensions. In addition, Tails has shown that he can read and translate Binary and Hexadecimal language. He is also a history buff who knows a lot about his world and its lore.

In direct combat, Tails lacks his friends' raw hand-to-hand combat skills, and focuses more on tactics and providing support to his allies.[27] On the occasion where he is fighting on his own however, Tails utilizes a fighting style that combines a blend of basic punches and/or swipes with his twin-tails. When applied in battle, his twin-tails become like whips that can lash out with significant power across a wide range. Tails can as well spin around with his twin-tails at high speeds to become a dangerous top that can tear through opponents. Tails also has a number of aerial maneuvers to get advantage over ground-bound opponents. These maneuvers let him launch attacks at foes from above or fly at them with increased momentum.[28] During some of his tougher periods of battles, Tails has also been known to complement his fighting style with gadgets.

Tails' Spin Jump

Tails using the Spin Jump.

Tails can also perform the Spin Attack, where he curls tightly into a concussive ball or cutting disk, while in locomotion to damage, mow down, or burrow through obstacles and foes, and any substance if given enough speed. Using the Spin Jump, Tails can leap into the air and curl in a spinning ball to deal damage to anything he lands on. The Spin Dash lets him shoot himself as an acceleration roll at high speeds to break barriers or mow down enemies. The Homing Attack allows Tails to jump and home in on an enemy to attack.

Tails has excellent skills when it comes to piloting aircrafts and driving vehicles,[29] including mechs and racecars. He also has incredible aerial dogfighting skills, being able to win areal battles against massive ships like the Egg Carrier and Egg Cauldron with his personalized biplanes. Tails is also a talented Extreme Gear rider in his own right, and possibly one of the best in the world due to his ability to go head-to-head with the Babylon Rogues, who are considered the best Extreme Gear riders around. On an Extreme Gear, he has enough skills to ride through mid-air with great control.

Equipment and weapons[]

As shown on several occasions, Tails tends to make use of various mechanical devices to improve his battle prowess, such as his Magic Hand, Energy Cannon and Big Hand.[30] He also occasionally carries around a wide arsenal of bombs, from basic explosives, to remote-controlled mines, to Flash Bang grenades. He also has equipment for support, like healing devices, bots for fortifying his defenses and the Helmet. Another example is his Cyclone mech, which he used to combat G.U.N.'s forces during the Shadow incident.

Once, Tails made use of the Ring Boomerang, which could pull and latch onto objects like a grappling hook. On a few occasions, he has also used Dummy Rings as projectile weaponry.

Tails' Mechanical Creations[]

Tails finalsmash

Tails in the Tornado.

Although Tails can fly by twirling his two tails like the blades of a helicopter, he also enjoys flying Sonic's red biplane, the Tornado. As the series progressed, it was obvious his interest in the old biplane went further than just piloting it - Tails is a prodigy with mechanics, and he has a mechanical ability equal to that of Dr. Eggman's (though Tails has not appeared to have built a completely sentient robot). As a result, many modifications were made to the Tornado, as well as new biplanes and a small, blue submarine called the "Sea Fox", a spaceship called the "Lunar Fox", and a race car called the "Whirlwind S7," which is clearly based on the Lotus/Catherham Super Seven (hence the name). In Tails Adventure, he built a small remote-controlled robot in his image to help him on his quest.

In Sonic Adventure, Tails was experimenting with a Chaos Emerald-powered prototype plane based on the Tornado, Tornado 2. The Tornado 2 has two modes: one is quite similar to the original Tornado, but with a button press, Tails could make it transform into a rather futuristic-looking little plane which outperformed the Tornado in all but one important function - landing gear. Big the Cat ended up flying the wrecked Tornado 2 to his home after Sonic and Tails crash-landed on Eggman's flying fortress, the Egg Carrier.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Tails had a new plane, the Tornado III. The Tornado III has three modes: a plane mode, a car mode, and a walker mode. The airplane is only seen in cut-scenes; the car is used on only one level (In the Kart mini game, Tails uses a go-kart); the walker mode, called the Cyclone, is used most during the game. Tails uses the Cyclone during all other gameplay, except when visiting the Chao Garden. The old Tornado 2 then appears in cutscenes in both Sonic Heroes and Sonic Riders. In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Tornado III reappeared as its Sonic Adventure 2 version.

In Sonic Battle, Tails comes equipped with an arm cannon that fires electrical energy, presumably of his own invention.

In Sonic Rush Adventure, Tails constructs six new vehicles with the first four being playable while the last two only appear in cutscenes. The first is the Wave Cyclone which is a water-bike that has an effective boost function that can plow through enemies, a sail boat called the Ocean Tornado that is armed with machine guns, cannons and a flamethrower, the hovercraft Aqua Blast that has a charged beam function and can spin, the Deep Typhoon is a submarine that carries missiles and the last of the water crafts is the SS Tornado EX that can do dimensional travel. The last one is the only vehicle that does not travel on water, the Magma Hurricane that is a drilling vehicle.

Tails brings along portable machines during the events of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, focusing on aiding allies and weakening enemies as a "Support" character. In the game, he and Eggman build the Cyclone, a starship for Sonic and his friends to travel into the Twilight Cage.

In Sonic Unleashed, Tails has seemingly invented a portable monitor labeled "Miles Electric" that can apparently pick up and process satellite imaging, as demonstrated when Tails uses it to show Sonic and Chip that a part of the planet has been put back into place. Tails is frequently seen with this device in one hand during the game, and during portions of the game featuring flying on the Tornado, this same device, or a similar device is used as a sort of on-board computer for the Tornado. It can also be seen during most loading screens.

Tornado 03

The "Miles Electric" also appeared in Sonic Colors, where Tails built a translator into it, thus playing an important role in the game as he was able to get information about the Wisps and Eggman's plans from Yacker, a white Wisp which was saved by Sonic.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic uses a red rocket to chase Eggman to the E.G.G. Station Zone. The front of the rocket has Tails' twin tails symbol on the front. Later, Metal Sonic would use the same rocket to catch up to Sonic and Tails in White Park Zone.

In Sonic Generations, Tails builds an unnamed transmitter that allows him and Sonic's other friends to communicate with the two Super Sonics during the final battle with the Time Eater.

Tails is one of the few characters in the series who has used firearms and missiles. Of the few characters, Tails is the only one of Sonic's friends and the only hero who has used firearms and missiles. Shadow is an anti-hero or neutral and Dr. Eggman is a villain. Tails has built multiple firearms, from machine guns and vulcan cannons to missile launchers, and he built the ammunition for them as well. Tails has built these into multiple of his devices so he can fight evil, but he has also used a few by hand.

  • Some of the games Tails has used firearms are listed below.
    • Tails Adventure, Tails utiles numerous weapons, most notably bombs.
    • Sonic Adventure, machine gun and homing missiles built into the Tornado and Tornado 2.
    • Sonic Adventure 2, vulcan cannon, bazooka and homing missiles built into the Tornado 3.
    • Sonic Battle, arm blaster cannon, and Chu2 Bombs.
    • Sonic Rush Adventure, missiles, bombs, machine guns and flamethrowers built into multiple crafts.
    • Sonic Unleashed, missiles built into the Tornado.
    • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, All-Star Move that summons two mini Tornadoes that initiate full-auto on machine guns, missiles, and bombs onto other racers.

Transformations[]

Super Tails[]

Super Tails in Sonic Heroes.

By using all seven Super Emeralds, or later the seven Chaos Emeralds, Tails can enter a Super State, transforming him into Super Tails. In this state, all of Tails' abilities far surpasses his normal ones. He is also able to fly without his twin-tails, and is nearly invulnerable. However, this transformation consumes a lot of energy and requires Rings to be maintained.

Color Powers[]

Main article: Color Power

By harnessing different variants of Hyper-go-on from Wisps, Tails can use specific Color Powers to transform into a certain form, such as a drill, a laser or even a planet, each one possessing its own unique abilities. So far, Tails has been able to transform into the Cyan Laser, Yellow Drill, and Indigo Asteroid. However, these transformations require a steady supply of Hyper-go-on to be maintained.

Weaknesses[]

Tails has a tendency to talk too much as shown in Sonic Adventure 2 when he reveals to Dr. Eggman that the Chaos Emerald Sonic was trying to give him was a fake. He is also said to be afraid of lightning and ghosts, as he can be sometimes heard screaming when ghosts appeared in Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion on Sonic Heroes.

Although he is capable of flying and gliding on his own with his twin tails, this requires great effort and stamina, and it can exhaust him heavily. He can get fatigued more easily if he is carrying something while flying, although this is dependent on the weight of what he is carrying.

Tails occasionally lacks self-confidence but has been shown to get over this weakness on some occasions.

One of Tails' bigger weaknesses is his meekness towards women. He is easily flustered, something typically attributed to his young age. This allows him to be easily manipulated by Amy's overzealousness or Rouge's flirtatious nature should they want his help.

Tails also says in Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) that he gets dizzy easily; although this apparently does not affect him when he uses a Spin Dash, Tails Attack, Rapid Tails Attack or Spinball Jump. In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, Tails can be seen with stars over his head indicating dizziness after performing a Tornado Combo, though this only happens if he crashes into something, signifying that he is dazed due to the impact.
