"Meet Mift" is the second episode in the first season of Monsters at Work. It aired on July 7, 2021 on Disney+ and aired on January 6, 2023 on Disney Channel.
Synopsis[]
When Tylor is initiated into MIFT during a bizarre ritual, he wants nothing more than to get away from his odd coworkers. But when an emergency strikes Monsters, Inc., MIFT kicks into action and Tylor develops a hint of respect for the misfit team.
Plot[]
Tylor gets dropped off at Monsters, Inc. by his mother Millie who thinks he is exaggerating about his MIFT coworkers. However, she learns first-hand how eccentric they are when she meets Fritz and Val for the first time and accepts that they are a little weird. Upon entering the building, Tylor is brought to the back room by MIFT for his initiation which is elaborate and somewhat jarring. They ask him to "wrench the nut", but he fumbles it, and the nut falls down a seemingly endless pipe. Nevertheless, they have him enter through a doorway via conveyor belt, but Tylor is very much reluctant to enter when they say that his time with MIFT will be for eternity. Just as he goes through the doorway, the power goes out.
Monsters, Inc. is experiencing slight power outages as the monsters are quickly trying to gather as much laugh power as they possibly can. Mike is in the lead but is quickly getting tired and sleepy from overworking. Sulley tries to give him coffee to no avail. When Roze mentions that Mike needs to teach his comedy class, Needleman and Smitty offer him "36 1/2 Hour Energy" drink which immediately begins to power him up. Tylor becomes annoyed when MIFT gives him the break room table as his desk (they ran out) and give him a wrench with his name inscribed on it. When Duncan messes with Tylor with a faulty cannister, he angrily leaves as he heads to Mike's comedy class. The rest of MIFT learns what happened and decides to follow him.
Mike hyperactively teaches the class as MIFT enters to sit in with Tylor, much to his annoyance. Mike steps away while Ms. Flint takes over the class so that he can continue his work at the laugh floor. However, another outage occurs and he is trapped in the bedroom. Back at the class, Banana Bread offers his own logic on humor which actually amuses Ms. Flint. MIFT is suddenly called to the laugh floor as they all leave, though Ms. Flint asks Banana Bread to stay. MIFT immediately gets to work on fixing the door and manage to get Mike out, only for him to accidentally step on the control panel and launch the door back into the door room. Needing to turn a nut-like switch, Tylor finally accepts his job and successfully helps rescue Mike who finally falls asleep from being overworked and he is personally thanked by Celia and Sulley.
MIFT returns to the main room to celebrate Tylor's success with helping aid the team when Ms. Flint and Banana Bread, whose real name is Winchester, suddenly enter to announce the latter's acceptance into being a jokester for the main team. While MIFT is sad to see him go, it opens up his desk so that Tylor can take it as he happily accepts his place with the MIFT team. As he heads into the back to help break open a piñata the nut that he previously dropped down the pipe suddenly falls back through the top and lands on his desk next to his wrench.
Mike's Comedy Class[]
