Mary-Mary Quite Contrary is one of the nursery rhyme characters to appear in Mother Goose: Rhymes To The Rescue.

Background[]

Mary, Mary, quite contrary

How does your garden grow?

With silver bells and cockleshells

And pretty maids all in a row.

Mary may be a great gardener, but she is definitely quite contrary. She doesn't like her garden being messed up or not being allowed to work in it. However, she can be helpful when it comes to stopping the Ill Wills. She is concerned that Old MacDonald is in love with her, which he really is not. Then again, Mary's really not so bad once you get to know her. When she's not gardening, her tools come in handy for other things like defeating the Wills.

Mary appears as a black-haired woman with red lipstick in a maroon shirt, blue overalls, green gardening gloves, light green boots, and a sky blue sunhat with a magenta band.

Appearances[]

In the movie, Mary is seen working in her garden as she is greeted by Old MacDonald on his horse, Marshall. Despite being neighborly, she reminds the farmer to keep his horse out of her garden (fearing that Marshall might eat her flowers) and she's concerned about Old Mac falling in love with her (but he doesn't, he just prefers to be her neighbor).

Mary even sings her rhyme as part of "The Nursery Rhyme Medley". As soon as the Ill Wills take control of Rhymeville, Mary is no longer allowed to work in her garden which somehow gets ruined. She comes to the paper fortress demanding to have her garden restored and being allowed to work in it again, but Commander Will refuses, argues with her, and the gardener is imprisoned along with Mother Goose, Goosey Gander, Peter-Peter Pumpkin-Eater, and the Sprats.

Though on the bright side, Mary stops being contrary as she and friends start hoping for the best. Once Old MacDonald and his gang arrive, they free the prisoners as the farmer tells Mary that he's not expecting any thanks from her. But before the Rhymesters can escape, the Ill Wills trap them refusing to let them continue their rhymes since the Wills hate rhymes and children.

While Mother Goose goes after Commander Will, the Rhymesters take on the other Wills. Mary helps Little Bo Peep defeat an Ill Will by watering it with her watering can.

As soon as all the Ill Wills are gone, Mother Goose decrees that she and her Rhymesters shall continue to do their rhymes. Mary kisses Old MacDonald, revealing that she actually loves him all along. Mary is even seen at the celebration party in Old King Cole's castle; after the party, Mary and her friends return home to continue acting out their rhymes. In the end, Mary and the other Rhymesters wave goodbye to the viewers.

Video Games[]

Mary appears in the video game as appears in the video game as one of the playable characters once she is freed from imprisonment in her garden. Her abilities are to garden with her supplies.

Trivia[]
