Mackenzie Border Collie[1] is a secondary character that has appeared in multiple episodes of Bluey. He is one of Bluey's close friends.
Bluey.tv Description[]
Mackenzie is Bluey’s friend from school. He and his family are border collies who moved to Australia from New Zealand.
His mum and dad still root for the Kiwis in football, much to the chagrin of the neighbours and the confusion of Mackenzie.
Mackenzie likes to get to the point and will usually give a straightforward answer to any question.
Herding and jumping on sheep are talents that run in his family and come very naturally to Mackenzie. At school, Mackenzie has a big buddy named Captain and the two share a secret handshake.
"Quick, sociable and from New Zealand."
Appearance[]
Mackenzie is a Border Collie[2] with white and black fur. He has a black left foot, a black right leg, black arms, torso, tail, head and ears, and a white right foot, a white left leg, white hands, muzzle, face and inner ears. He also has a black nose. His left ear is pointed up, while his right ear droops.
Personality[]
Mackenzie is a playful, enthusiastic and friendly kid who speaks his mind at times. He has a big heart and will lend it to his friends whenever they need help.[3] He is sometimes impatient,[4] and prefers to get to the point. Mackenzie can come off as rude at times, but is easy to cheer up.[5]
Biography[]
Mackenzie, who originates from New Zealand having moved to Queensland, is the son of his parents, a member of Calypso's class, and one of Bluey and Bingo's friends. He has a big buddy named Captain, who Bluey indirectly introduced her big buddy Mia to.
While he often hangs out with his friends, the two most significant being Jack and Rusty[6][7], it has been established in episodes like "The Creek" and "Barky Boats" that Mackenzie is close friends with Bluey, with the two sharing a friendly rivalry[8] presumably spurred on by Winton playfully suggesting that the two's overlapping talk in the latter episode was a sign that they're going to "marry". Bluey has also gotten Mackenzie to help her with certain tasks, such as being a background character in her movie in "Bumpy and the Wise Old Wolfhound", and his parents are presumably shown to be good friends with Bluey's parents, with Mackenzie himself also being friends with her sister. However, despite their close friendship, Bluey and Mackenzie will still have disagreements regarding certain things; in "Shops", Bluey's constant interruptions drive him away from playing the titular game before she apologises to him, promising that she won't interrupt the game anymore.
In "Space", it is implied that he suffered from a traumatic event as a result of feeling abandoned. However, Calypso calmed him down, telling him his mum did not leave him behind after all.

Trivia[]
- He is from New Zealand.
- He and Rusty both appear in the 2016 pilot and are the only characters outside the Heeler family to appear. As such, they're the first of Bluey's friends to appear.
- He appears with a different design, as his left leg and foot are the same as his right leg and foot, instead of having a white left leg and black left foot.
- Despite not appearing during the 2017 pilot proper, he can be seen in the theme song. This is due to using recycled animation from the 2016 pilot.
- While they're friends, Mackenzie and Bluey appear to show some friendly rivalry.
- Mackenzie and Bluey do have disagreements when playing games, as prominent in Shops.
- In Barky Boats, both Mackenzie and Bluey blew raspberries at each other, though they eventually have fun playing the titular game.
- In "Handstand", they have a friendly race.
- Being a Border Collie, he tends to jump on, and herd, sheep. This trait of his is referenced in "The Creek" and "Helicopter".
- Relatedly, Australian Cattle Dogs - the Heeler family's breed - herd cattle.
- Much like Judo, he calls Bandit "Bluey's Dad" (The Creek).
- Like Bluey and Bingo, many fans at first thought that he was the opposite gender because of the name "Mackenzie" usually being a girl name. This has even led to some international dubs of the show incorrectly portraying Mackenzie as a girl.
- In the first season of the Latin American dub, he is incorrectly portrayed as female, this is fixed in the following of said dub.
- He was also referred to as female in the first season of the Russian dub.
- In Space, it's revealed that Mackenzie used to have an abandonment issue stemming from a time when he was little where he found himself separated from his mother. At the end of the episode, he is able to find closure and move on.
- In Polish dub, his name is "Kołnierzyk" which means "Collar".
- In "Curry Quest", when Bandit is saying goodbye to Mackenzie and his parents, he refers to them as the "Border Collies" or perhaps a variation such as "Border-Collies". This would imply that that is their family surname.
- Furthermore, his new Bluey.tv character info page for a short time listed his name as "Mackenzie Border Collie" (under "Fun Facts").
