Karl Mordo was a student of the Ancient One who overheard Stephen Strange asking people for directions to the Kamar-Taj. Strange was attacked by three muggers, but Mordo saved his life.
In an alternate universe, Karl Mordo joined the Illuminati, which was created by that universe's Doctor Strange. But when Strange corrupted himself with dark magic to defeat Thanos, he was executed by the Illuminati, after which Mordo became the Sorcerer Supreme.

In the MCU, he is black-skinned. In Ultimate Spider-Man and other cartoon appearances (as well as the comics), he is white-skinned.
