James Jonah "Jim" Cummings is a veteran American voice actor and singer, who has appeared in over 600 roles. He is known for his ability to emulate Sterling Holloway's soft, timid Pooh voice, Paul Winchell's crazy-like Tigger laugh, as well as for giving a certain gruff-sounding voice to several other characters, such as Pete.

Background[]

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Cummings moved to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was young. It was there that he worked on Mardi Gras floats and as a door-to-door salesman. He then moved to California, where he worked odd jobs before he became a voice actor.

He has voiced many characters in several Disney productions, most notably Darkwing Duck, Negaduck, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Pete, Ray, Bonkers D. Bobcat, Kaa, Ed, Big Bad Wolf, among others. He also provided the opening narration for the Phineas and Ferb special "Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars" and narrated the Aladdin read-along storybook.

Trivia[]

  • Cummings' favorite Disney character voice roles are Pete (his main favorite voice role), Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, Ray, and Hondo Ohnaka.[1]
  • He was a fan of Davy Crockett growing up and still has his coonskin cap.[1]
  • Outside of Disney, Cummings is also well-known for voicing antagonistic characters, including General Parvo in the Kids' WB animated series Road Rovers, Skrawl in the Nickelodeon animated series ChalkZone, Dr. Robotnik in the SatAM version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Steele in the 1995 Universal Pictures animated film Balto.
  • Jim Cummings had been paired up with fellow actor Tom Kenny in several shows, such as The Powerpuff Girls and CatDog. Thus, they were reunited in a way when Cummings voiced Pooh and Tigger and Kenny voiced Rabbit in the 2011 Winnie the Pooh film.
  • Cummings and Brad Garrett both reprised their roles as Pooh and Tigger (Cummings) along with Eeyore (Garrett) in the 2018 live-action film Christopher Robin. This makes them the first two voice actors to reprise their respective voice roles in a live-action film.
  • Along with voice acting, Jim also currently runs a YouTube channel called "Toon'd in with Jim Cummings", where he, along with his producer Chris, interviews voice actors not just from Disney but from other companies too.
    • On his 72nd birthday, Jim received the YouTube silver play button award for passing 100K subscribers on his channel.
  • Cummings only met Sterling Holloway, the original voice of Pooh, once and it was before he had entered the voice acting business. He overheard him in a restaurant requesting chowder and walked over to him where he shared a smile with him. Since then, whenever Cummings needs to get into character as Pooh, he mutters, "Oh... well... let's see... I'll have the chowder."
  • Besides Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, Cummings also auditioned for Eeyore, which he assumed was the role he would end up getting. He was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had won Pooh instead. The role of Eeyore would later be given to Peter Cullen.
