Jean-Luc is a minor character in Bluey. He is also a secondary character in his only episode, “Camping”.

Bluey.tv Description[]

Jean-Luc is a dark blue labrador who is visiting Australia with his family all the way from Canada.

He and his family speak French, but that doesn’t stand in the way of him playing with Bluey when the two of them meet on a camping trip.

Jean-Luc and Bluey form a fast connection and despite only seeing each other for a few days, they remember each other forever.

As Jean-Luc gets older, he teaches himself to speak English so he can return to Australia and visit Bluey.

"Bluey’s French Canadian camping buddy."

Appearance[]

Jean-Luc is a Labrador with Bluish-black fur covering his full body. He also has a dark blue nose.

Biography[]

Jean-Luc is friends with Bluey and is the son of Jean-Luc's Dad and Jean-Luc's Mum.

Jean-Luc and his parents went to Australia on holiday when he was primary school age and happened to be camping in the same area as the Heeler family. Jean-Luc met and befriended Bluey, in spite of the fact that she didn't speak French and he didn't speak English. The pair worked together to build a tent out of branches and leaves, and planted a seed near the creek where they first met. Enjoying their wilderness survival game, they attempted to ambush Bluey's father Bandit, whom they had decided was a wild pig. The pair went back to their families for dinner afterwards, with Jean-Luc animatedly speaking with his parents before going to bed.

The next morning, Bluey, came to collect Jean-Luc from his family's tent, and they continued work on the shelter. After checking the seed they had planted, they once again attempted to ambush Bandit, but due to their language barrier failed to catch him. The next day they succeeded after finding a way to communicate using mud drawings on a rock. Painted with mud, the pair succeeded in capturing the "pig", and then washed off in the creek. However, when they were called for dinner and Bluey hugged Jean-Luc and said she would see him the next day, Jean-Luc responded sadly before saying goodbye. The next day, Bluey was greatly dismayed to find that Jean-Luc and his parents had left to go home.

That night, Bluey talked to her mum about missing Jean-Luc, and their conversation included the following:

Chilli: "Well look, sometimes special people come into our lives, stay for a bit, and then they have to go."
Bluey: "But that's sad."
Chilli: "It is. But the bit where they were here was happy, wasn't it?"
Bluey: "Yeah, we caught a wild pig together."
Chilli: "Maybe that makes it all worth it."
Bluey: "Will I ever see him again?"
Chilli: "Well, you never know. The world's a magical place."[2]

Bluey would commemorate her friendship with Jean-Luc with a drawing, which was hung on the wall in her house.[3][4] Years later, Jean-Luc went back to Australia and visited the same camping area. He found Bluey sitting beneath a tree that had grown from the seed they planted together, and greeted her by saying hello.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Jean-Luc and his parents speak French.
  • He is French-Canadian[6].
    • His breed – the Labrador Retriever – is named after the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. As the name suggests, the province is comprised of the island of Newfoundland and the mainland region of Labrador, which is located in the northeast of Canada and borders the predominantly French-speaking province of Québec. The province also lends its name to another breed of dog: the Newfoundland or "Newfie."
    • Jean-Luc and Bluey strike up a friendship despite him being unable to speak English; though his ability to follow along with Bluey's more basic statements would suggest he at least knows more English than Bluey knows French (this is justified by the fact that he's French-Canadian, as English and French are the two national languages of Canada and he likely knows at least a small amount of English). The language barrier slightly impedes their strategising when ambushing Bandit, requiring them to try it a few times, and more dramatically means his emotional farewell goes completely over her head. In the episode's ending, teen Jean-Luc greets teen Bluey in English.
  • His model is very similar to Lucky, except that his torso is oblong, where Lucky is narrower at the waist.
  • A drawing of him and Bluey can be seen in the episodes of Bingo and The Show.
  • In the French dub, Jean Luc is renamed Johnny, and he speaks English.
    • This is the reverse of how it is in the original English version.
  • He only appears physically in one episode.
  • His name is pronounced "John-Luke."
  • It is revealed at the end of Camping that Jean-Luc eventually learns English, so he can visit Australia in order to see Bluey again. [7]
