Izzy Hawthorne is the deuteragonist of the 2022 Disney•Pixar animated film Lightyear.
Background[]
Izzy is Alisha's super motivated granddaughter eighty-nine years later in the future who leads the Junior Zap Patrol, a volunteer team of self-motivated cadets training to become protectors of the nascent society that has taken shape on the planet. Izzy dreams of becoming a Space Ranger like her grandmother, but that is easier said than done due to her fear of Space (which she eventually overcame).
Physical appearance[]
Izzy is a young black woman who bares a striking resembles to her grandmother. She has dark curly hair tied back in two buns and has gold brown eyes. She wears a gold brown armored suit with the number "42" labelled on her right shoulder pad. At some point in the film, she bears her grandmother's Space Ranger suit.
Role in the Film[]
Izzy first appears in a hologram depicting her late grandmother Alisha who is leaving a message for Buzz just as Izzy is excited to be a Space Ranger like Buzz. However, due to the time dilation, Alisha emotionally bids her final moments with her granddaughter before she passes away from old age just before the hologram turns off.
After 22 years, 19 weeks, and 4 days have passed through the effects of time dilation while Buzz was doing his hyper speed mission, Buzz later encounters an older Izzy on T'Kani Prime which was revealed to have been invaded by a group of robots working for Zurg and just as Buzz follows her, she introduces herself to him just before arriving in a safe place where no robots could find them. Izzy discusses that a spaceship controlled by Emperor Zurg showed up about a week ago summoning robots to surround the base of T'Kani Prime and during a discussion with Izzy, she takes Buzz to a secret base introducing him to an elite squad consisting of Darby Steel, Mo Morrison, and DERIC, a green ERIC robot that is part of Izzy's team.
Later while devising a plan to stop Zurg's plans and save T'Kani Prime, Izzy recaps that she read about Operation Thunder Spear by reading her grandmother's Space Ranger books twice. As the team moves forward to continue their mission, Izzy, Darby, Mo, DERIC, and Sox became aware of a Zyclops which suddenly attacked Buzz just as Izzy defends him from the robot using training ammo to attack the robot, only to find out that the ammo is ineffective, just before Mo and Darby defend Buzz from the Zyclops. However, Mo fires a harpoon onto the Zyclops' head, resulting the robot to become defeated just before Buzz goes into a conversation with Izzy and her team. While discussing with the Junior Patrol, Izzy explains to Buzz that the Junior Patrol is a volunteer team of self-motivated cadets who train one weekend a month at the outpost in T'Kani Prime, telling Buzz that she, Mo. and Darby were the first members to arrive last weekend when a group of Zyclopses showed up. During a discussion, DERIC tells Buzz and the Junior Patrol that there are optional spacecraft at the abandoned storage depot located adjacent to the Resource Reconstituting Center; however, as DERIC is explaining a lot of directions to get there, Izzy, Buzz, Sox, and the rest of the Junior Patrol, board on their truck to find the area DERIC talked about.
Arriving at the base, Buzz tells the Junior Patrol that he will board the P-32 Armadillo in a plan to defeat Zurg, leaving Mo and the rest of the Junior Patrol behind; however, the Junior Patrol follows Buzz and Sox into the base into the area where Buzz wears an astronaut suit only for the heroes to be ambushed by a large swarm of insectoid creatures outside the hall. Izzy escapes from the bugs with Mo and Darby into the Armadillo and just as Buzz plans to destroy Zurg's ship, the heroes are suddenly ambushed by Zurg who fires a laser on the Armadillo, resulting Buzz and his allies to land in a distant area of T'Kani Prime. Later after Sox tasks Buzz to find a material of specialized capacitance, Izzy suggests the mining facility might have the specialized capacitance Sox was talking about, leading Buzz, the Junior Patrol, and Sox to head to the area to find the resource for the Armadillo.
At the Terillium Mine, Izzy, Buzz, and the rest of the Junior Patrol, arrive at the facility within the mine and just as they enter, four AI devices activate and trap Izzy and her allies in capture cones, leaving them unable to escape. Just as Darby gets caught in the same cone where Mo was trapped, Izzy ends up getting caught in the cone as well, alongside Sox, leading the four to slam their cone into the control after Buzz keeps the door open, although they are unable to disarm the traps; Buzz and his allies (who are all in the same cone) managed to slam the control very hard while the door is still open, albeit the pressure they put causes a part of the platform carrying part of the building to collapse. Izzy, Mo, and Darby escape from the collapsing part of the building, followed by Buzz and Sox arriving safely. Having escaped, Mo sees a vending machine nearby, giving his friends each a meat sandwich for snack.
Later, Buzz shares his story with Izzy, Mo, and Darby about how he made a mistake in the past every day, especially during the obstacle course he had during hyper speed test just as Izzy listens to Buzz about what her late grandmother saw something in him just before Sox recalibrates. After Sox showed a restored file of Alisha to Izzy, Buzz explained that Alisha believed he could fix the mistake he made caused by the time dilation effects. Izzy replies that her grandmother Alisha had Kiko, her father, and all her friends during her life on T'Kani Prime just before Alisha died.
Upon exiting the facility in the mines, Izzy continues to follow Sox, just as Buzz and the rest of the Junior Patrol follow along just as Buzz plans to board on the Armadillo without causing any more trouble only to be ambushed by Zurg who attacks them during an ambush. Izzy, Darby, and Mo defend Buzz from Zurg just before boarding the Armadillo. Upon boarding the Armadillo, Mo, Buzz, Sox, and the rest of the Junior Patrol are ambushed by a group of Zyclopses during a chase while Sox reports the progress of the ship going to hyper speed in order to reach Zurg's ship. Izzy later approaches Buzz who tells him about the mistake that happened, which he replies to her that he failed the mission, planning to face Zurg himself, only for Buzz to be captured by Zurg, which Izzy, Mo, Darby, and Sox notice the ambush.
With Buzz captured by Zurg, Izzy begins to lose faith in herself, believing it was her fault, claiming that she was supposed to be as good as her grandmother, but suddenly notices Zurg's ship above her, fearing that Buzz was captured inside. This leads Izzy to rescue Buzz and reunite him with the Junior Patrol just as Sox, Mo, and Darby follow alongside her in teamwork. The Junior Patrol and Sox board on the Armadillo and due to a teleportation device placed on the ship, it teleports to Zurg's ship.
Just as Izzy enters, Sox follows alongside her in a plan to rescue Buzz where they enter the chamber where Buzz is confronting Zurg in his ship. Seeing another airlock leading to the room where Buzz is confronting Zurg, Izzy became determined enough to enter through the airlock, although she almost lost Sox in space; together, the two were able to enter the airlock, but the door is locked. This leads Izzy to use Sox with his blowtorch gadget to break open a door to enter the chamber where Buzz is captured. As Izzy enters in stealth mode, she alerts Buzz to blow up the ship in order to escape which Buzz fires onto the main control. Izzy escapes with Sox into the Armadillo, followed by Mo and Darby following along. Later, Buzz sees the Armadillo (containing the Junior Patrol and Sox) inside about to land onto T'Kani Prime, leading Buzz to hold onto the ship in order for it to land safely while Darby pulls the air break on the ship.
Upon landing back onto T'Kani Prime, Buzz approaches Izzy who tells her that her grandmother Alisha would be proud if she saw her as a Space Ranger and as Izzy asks her about the fuel crystal, Buzz recaps that it is gone during his plan to return home. Suddenly, Commander Burnside and the rest of the ZAP Patrol approach Buzz, the Junior Patrol, and Sox where Burnside plans to hire Buzz to start his new version of Star Command, only for Buzz to tell him that he has his own team. With Buzz and his team as Space Rangers, Izzy approaches a statue of her late grandmother, telling her that she is a Space Ranger while Buzz gives a salute in honor of Alisha. Later, Izzy, Buzz, Sox, and the rest of the Space Rangers board onto the SR-01, embarking on a new adventure.
