Hugo is the main protagonist of the Creature of the Jungle franchise. He is a unique jungle animal growing up from the jungle of South America. Hugo only lived with his two ape guardians Zig and Zag, who taught him how to climb in trees and swing.
Background[]
Personality[]
In the original first film, he is cheeky, carefree, playful and loves hanging out with his friends. He is also clever and mischievous, able to outwit other animals, is prone to bragging and selfishness, but nonetheless has a kind heart and is concerned for the well-being of his friends. In the second film, he retains his smarts along with his mischievousness but becomes sad and depressed after parting ways with Rita at the end of the first film. He becomes more happy, however, when the two reunite after Conrad kidnapped Hugo and brought him back to the city. He is also more selfish in the sequel, given that even with a den to hide in and Rita by her side, he still complains about how cold it is, saying he'd rather go back to the studio with food and a warm place to sleep. In the third film, he has the same personality as in the previous films, though he's not as selfish.
Physical appearances[]
In the original book illustrations and short film, his design is a bit different compared to his later appearances. His design resembled a cross between a cat, a monkey and a bear. He has brown fur all over his body, cat-like whiskers and a short bushy tail. His nose is brown and has two teeth that are visibly seen outside his mouth. He has prehensile hands with opposable thumbs and human-like feet. He is bipedal, but can run quadrupedally, and can use various tools including levers and skateboards.
Throughout the rest of the franchise starting with the first film called Jungledyret, he was redesigned into a style reminiscent of Don Bluth and now resembles more of a teddy bear or a koala. He keeps his black eyes and he now has yellow fur that covers most of his body and light yellow skin on his hands and feet, has light yellow fur on his belly, and his whiskers are gone. In the second film called Hugo: The Movie Star, he was redesigned yet again, abandoning the Don Bluth artstyle and adopting a new, Disney-esque animation, and more original artstyle. He retains all his physical features except his eyes are now dark blue. In the third film, his eyes change once again from blue to brown.
In the new American franchise, Hugo resembles his old designs in the originals. He retains much of the appearance as adult Simba but doesn't have a mane. He has has some noticeable darker colorations on his body, such as a brownish point above his nose. He also has cream underbelly, fingers and toes, and scarlet eyes.
