Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a CGI animated film series produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Bardel Entertainment and adapted and based upon the webcomics and book series of the same name by Jeff Kinney.
History[]
In 2008, it was announced that Fox 2000 Pictures had acquired the rights to produce films based on Jeff Kinney’s bestselling book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The deal was announced to have included the film rights to the first five books in the series.[1]
On March 19, 2010, the first film adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid was released by 20th Century Fox, which was followed by three sequels, adaptations of the second Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, released on March 25, 2011, the fourth installment, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, released on August 3, 2012, and the ninth installment, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, released on May 19, 2017.
During an interview for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck in 2013, Jeff Kinney announced that 20th Century Fox Animation was developing an animated special based on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever,[2] and that it was intended to be released in late 2014; however, the project was ultimately cancelled due to unknown reasons.
In August 2018, Stacey Snider, then-CEO of 20th Century Fox, announced that an animated television series was in-development after Jeff Kinney declined to have another live-action film made following the The Long Haul’s poor reception.
On March 20, 2019, Disney inherited the film rights as a result of their acquisition of 21st Century Fox, with plans for the acquisition being announced two years prior.[3]
For Disney Investor Day 2020, it was announced that the animated television series previously in-development would be redeveloped as a Disney+ Original animated film for exclusive release on Disney+, with an intended release date for the following year.[4]
