Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch, CBE, is an British-American actor, producer, and voice actor who is best known for his roles as Smaug and The Necromancer (both motion capture and voice) in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, William Ford in Steve McQueen's critically acclaimed historical drama film, 12 Years a Slave, Khan Noonien Singh in J.J. Abrams's science-fiction action film, Star Trek Into Darkness (both released in 2013), and as Alan Turing in the 2014 historical drama film, The Imitation Game, for which he received an nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He currently stars as fictional detective Sherlock Holmes on the BBC crime drama series Sherlock since 2010 with Martin Freeman as Watson.
Cumberbatch has also played Major Jamie Stewart in Steven Spielberg's 2011 war drama film, War Horse, and Julian Assange in Bill Condon's 2013 biographical thriller film, The Fifth Estate, which were both under the Touchstone Films banner. He voiced Classified, the leader of the North Wind in The Penguins of Madagascar, and the titular protagonist of Universal/Illumination's 2018 computer animated film, The Grinch.
Cumberbatch plays the titular Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios film of the same name, in Thor: Ragnarok, in Avengers: Infinity War, in Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home and in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and he will play an undisclosed role in Rogue Male. He also performed motion capture for Dormammu in Doctor Strange.
