Annabelle "Anne" Boonchuy is the protagonist of the 2019 Disney Channel animated series, Amphibia. She is a 13-year-old Thai-American girl, who originally resided on Earth, until a magical music box transported her to Amphibia, a world inhabited by anthropomorphic frogs, toads, newts, and other amphibians, large bugs, and other strange animals. In this world, Anne have a lot adventure and being friends with everyone in a village called Wartwood.

Background[]

Anne comes from a Thai-American family from California. She was also supposedly friends with two girls named Sasha and Marcy. However, in "Best Fronds" it is strongly implied that they were actually taking advantage of her, as she claims that one must do anything a friend wants oneself to do to keep the friendship alive, should one want to do it or not. One day, her "friends" forced her to steal a mysterious box from a store. Once she opened it, Anne along with Sasha and Marcy was transported to Amphibia, a world with anthropomorphic frogs and dangerous creatures. For some time, she was forced to live in a cave, which was very unpleasant for her, especially at night (as giant creatures tried to eat her). Ever since Anne met Sprig she has gone on one crazy adventure after another and has found a friend true friend in the goofy young frog.

Personality[]

Hoopa de boopa!
―Anne surprised

Anne is described to be fearless and self-centered. She also has a rebellious side, as shown in the second segment of the first episode where she and Sprig defied Hop Pop's orders of staying put and instead of going to the lake to swim.

In spite of this, Anne has deep value for her friends, feeling lost if she doesn't have a friend, and being willing to do anything to protect both her friends and her friendships with them. However, this latter trait is a double-edged sword, as it causes her to always save her friends in Amphibia even if she knows she may die while doing it, but also caused her to be manipulated by her "friends" on Earth to get what they wanted. Due to her relationship with Sprig she discovered what true friendship is and has continued to develop strong bonds with her new friends in Amphibia.

Anne started off as a slightly conceited girl who nevertheless embraced her ethnic roots. Anne is a pop-culture enthusiast with a love for young-adult movies and TV series. Like most teenagers Anne is obsessed with her phone, often watching shows and playing games on it.

During her time in Amphibia she has grown as a person, she deiced to respect teachers when before she disliked them, she stopped caring what others think of her, she learns the value of being a team player, and most importantly to stand up against what she knows is wrong, like Sasha's behavior.

She is shown to be kindhearted and selfless and loves helping others even those who treated her badly.

In spite of her recklessness, Anne can often deliver some good advice. This was seen in both "Grubhog Day", where she told Sprig to tell Hop Pop that he doesn't want to take care of the grubhog, and "Cursed!", where she told Sprig to just break up his engagement with Maddie due to his fear of her.

However, Anne would show a dislike of pineapples (especially as a pizza topping) and will threaten anyone mentioning it.

In the beginning of the series, she was disgusted at the idea of eating bugs but as the series progressed, she has come to really enjoy eating them. In "Toad Tax" when she realized this, she said "I've been here too long", but by "The Big Bugball Game" the fact that she now likes eating bugs no longer bothers her as she said "Eh who am I kidding I'll eat it".

Physical appearance[]

Anne is a tall, slender girl of Thai descent. She has bronze skin and giant messy, brown hair, which before coming to Amphibia, looked relatively the same. It has leaves and a twig sticking out on top as a sign of her having lived there for so long.

Clothing[]

She is adorned in her school uniform which consists of a mauve skirt and undershirt and a light blue-gray shirt with her school's coat of arms on it. She wears socks, but only one yellow shoe; having lost the other one sometime prior to meeting the Plantars.

Anne has been seen in other outfits over the course of the series:

  • In "Best Fronds", she was wearying a black tank top, purple swim trunks and yellow sandals.
  • First seen in "Flood, Sweat & Tears", Anne sleeps in a white shirt and black shots with purple stripes.
  • In "Girl Time" she wears a long green and yellow dress.
  • In "Lily Pad Thai", she wore a traditional Thai outfit.
  • In "Toad Tax" she wears a toad badge and a single bronze pauldron over her usual outfit.
  • In "Hop Pop and Lock", she was seen wearing two different outfits; a pink, green & black hip pop outfit and then a sparkling blue dress.
  • In "The Big Bugball Game" she wears a purple & and yellow tank top with the letter F on it and dark grey shorts.
  • In "Anne of the Year", she wears a white tuxedo.
  • In "Reunion", she wears armor and a signal green pauldron with a frog foot symbol over her usual outfit.
  • In her fantasy in "Anne Hunter", she is wearing an all black suit and eye black on her checks.

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Glowing Eyes: Anne's eyes were shown to be glowing blue first seen in the pilot hinting that the Clamity Box has given her a yet to be revealed power. In "Handy Anne", her eyes glow more promptly and slightly longer.
  • Bird communication (formerly): After being cursed by Barry and turned into a humanoid raven, Anne gained the ability to communicate with birds. She was able to squawk, albeit involuntary, and being able to understand what a raven who was with her says. She lost this ability when the curse on her was lifted. This was notably the only power she gained while under her curse.

Abilities[]

  • Culinary Skills: Anne is very a skilled cook thanks to years of helping her parents in their family restaurant.
  • Athleticism:In her own words Anne has "natural athletic ability" This is proven multiple times in the series as she is shown to be very fast and agile and has been able to learn new sports in a very short amount of time. She was against team sports, but after learning the importance of teamwork she now really enjoys them.
  • Dancing: Anne is a very skilled dancer and can teach others to dance like Hop Pop in "Hop Pop and Lock".
  • Swordsmanship: Thanks to Tritonio Espada's training she received in "Combat Camp" Anne can wield a sword in battle with great proficiency.
  • Hunting: Anne was reluctant to use Plantars' unorthodox hunting techniques at first, but she used them to save her surrogate frog family from danger.

Weapons[]

  • Tennis Racket: Her tennis racket was transported to Amphibia with her and she has used it to defend herself and attack enemies with it on more than one occasion.
  • Swords: Anne has been seen using a sword to fight throughout the series.

Role in the series[]

Before[]

Anne was best friends with two girls named Sasha and Marcy, Sasha tended to push Anne around through peer pressure while Marcy was so clumsy that Anne had to look out for her. At Sasha's behest, she abandoned her own birthday party set up by her family to go and steal a mysterious music box that was discovered by Marcy at a thrift store with her friends. The box transported her to the world of Amphibia where she spent the first couple of weeks fending for herself in the wild.

Season 1[]

"Spranne against the world!"

Upon meeting the native Amphibians, Anne was taken aback by their way of living. It is only when she started living with the Plantars that she began to open up and learn more about herself. Anne realized that much of what she was brought up on made her somewhat materialistic, and she began to accept simpler ways of living (though she still relies on her cell phone and has apparently gotten others addicted to its functions). There are even parts of herself that she had suppressed that, thanks to Sprig and the rest of the Plantars, she has opened up on such as cooking as seen in "Lily Pad Thai".

File:Reunion - Hug.png

Anne embracing her surrogate frog family.

Her relationship with Sasha also begins to unravel as it becomes apparent that much of her decisions were more the result of being pressured and pushed around by her. Her perception of friendship is depicted in "Best Fronds" when she states, "If a friend likes a pencil case, you get it for them. If your friend likes your new shoes, you give them to her. And if your friend wants you to steal a crazy music box from a thrift store, even if you really don't want to, you do it, okay?" Through her constant interaction with Sprig, a somewhat simple-minded child, Anne is able to look at friendship in a whole new way. She begins to desire a more compassionate relationship with those close to her. In "Reunion", she finally sees through Sasha's manipulative tactics thanks to Sprig who sees Anne for who she is: a kind and considerate person who is willing to protect her friends. After defeating Sasha in a dual the two girls are once Toad Tower started to collapse, forcing Captain Grime to retreat with an unconscious Sasha. After getting back to Wartwood, the Plantars apologize that Anne lost Sasha as a friend, but Anne tells them it is okay because she considers them her family and that as long as they stay together, they'll get through anything.

Season 2[]

Hop Pop: "Well, let's get this fwagon on the road. No turning back now!"
Anne: "Did we give the key to Chuck?"
Hop Pop: "We're turning back now!"
―Anne and the Planters leaving for Newtopia
File:Marcy at the Gates - Anne and Marcy hold hands.jpg

Anne puts her trust in Marcy.

In Season Two, Anne and the Planters set of on a journey to Newtopia to find Anne way home; before leaving Anne's eyes began glowing during a fight with a giant mutant vegetable monster. During their journey they came across an abandoned factory and escaped before it collapsed; but unbeknownst them the factory created a frog-like robot just before it's destruction; the robot then proceeded to follow Anne and the Planters. Upon arriving at Newtopia she is reunited with Marcy, her other human friend. During a quest to drive away a colony of giant bloodthirsty Barbari-Ants, Anne still thinks Marcy needs protection but learns Marcy can take care of herself now (Although Marcy is still a little clumsy). After a successful mission Anne tells Marcy about about her fight with Sasha and they both promise that not only together would work to get back with Sasha, but find a proper way to get home. Anne and the Planters meet King Andrias, while he appears to be a jovial and kindly ruler, he seems to be plotting something involving the human girls.

During one of their adventures in Newtopia, Anne and Sprig's bond becomes even stronger after learning about each other's moms. Anne misses her mom so much she would do anything to even hear her "Tone Deaf" singing; She even went to great lengths to get a gift for her for when she eventually returns to earth and is reunited with her mother. Sprig revels his mother passed away when he and Polly were really young and doesn't even remember her; as Sprig wonder if you can miss someone without knowing them, Anne gave him a big hug as they both cry.

During their sleepover Anne, Sprig, Polly and Marcy venture down to the castle's basement which is strictly off limits where they encounter some strange things; A flooded tomb full of strange creatures, 2 halls of mirrors, a chamber with plants that don't need sunlight to grow and a torn portrait of King Andrias with an unknown frog and toad. The next morning they learn from King Andrias that the music box that transported Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to Amphibia once belonged to his ancestors who used to travel to other worlds and to get the box working again each of the box's gems needed to be recharged at 3 different temples.

Relationships[]

Plantar Family[]

Well, whatever happens next, one thing's for sure. If we’re together, I know we’ll be all right.
―Anne as she embraces the Planters[src]

Though they had a rocky start, the Planters were the first amphibians to accept Anne. They took her in and over the course of the series treated with her respect and kindness to the point they consider her a part of their family.

Sprig Plantar[]

Spranne against the world!
―Anne and Sprig together[src]
File:Anne & Sprig Best Fronds.PNG

Anne & Spig staring to bond.

Anne and Sprig have a very strong friendship. While she found him slightly gross and detestable at first meeting, they were able to quickly bond with one another due to their similar personalities. They continuously refer to themselves as "Spranne" and even have a catchphrase: "Spranne against the world!" Anne acts as the straight man to Sprig's foil and is always trying to lead him in the right direction, even if that direction is unintentionally off a cliff. She acts like an older sister to him and has a genuine care about him that borders on protective. Anne is aware that Sprig is the first person to stand up for her as he sees her for the kind and generous person that she is. As shown in "Bizarre Bazaar", they have zero romantic attraction with one another for obvious reasons though Anne did seem quite perturbed that Sprig stated that it was because she was "too old" for him. She became very supportive of him courting Ivy Sundew as she felt that the two were meant to be together. In "Hopping Mall", the two of them bond over their mutual feelings of mother figures, or in Sprig's case, lack thereof, in their current lives.

Polly Plantar[]

Polly: "I guess it's just kinda hard to spit when you feel gross."
Anne: "Polly, I'm the gross one. I tried to change someone that's perfect the way they are."
―Anne apologizing to Polly
File:Ampibia A1E17B Yeah I get it he-he-he.PNG

Anne and Polly laughing together.

Anne seemed slightly perturbed by Polly when she first met her. In "Cane Crazy", Polly was reluctant to help her because she barely knew her and only agreed to help after Anne offered her candy from her world, but by the end of the episode Polly admitted she was starting to like Anne. By the events of "Girl Time", Anne desired to become closer to her while trying to enforce what she viewed as girlish onto Polly. By the end of the episode, she began to accept her more masculine and crass behavior and Polly grew closer to Anne. Since then the two get along quite well and have become very close, forming a sisterly bond. Anne is usually seen holding Polly or letting her sit on her head, showing that she trusts her enough and certain episodes have shown that the two share a lot in common in terms of being adventurous. In "Lost in Newtopia", the two try to create a collective name for themselves; first with "Puh-Anne" and then "An-Olly", neither of which the two find very appealing.

Hop Pop Plantar[]

Anne: "You're always going on about the old days, I'm always going on about back home."
Hop Pop: "Yeah, deep down we're just a couple of softies, ain't we?"
―Anne and Hop Pop bonding
File:S1E3B Anne and Hop Pop reconcile.png

Anne and Hop Pop getting along.

Anne initially had a hard time getting along with Hop Pop due to her more rebellious attitude and his wizened by the book experience. It was not until the events of "Stakeout" that Anne began to see Hop Pop in a new light. He told her that she reminded him of himself when he was younger which made the two grow close. Anne in some ways sees Hop Pop as a surrogate grandfather for her and, despite disobeying him, does come around to looking for his wisdom to help her out. Anne is also prone to making fun of Hop Pop due to his dated beliefs, but also tries to teach him modern ideas and trends. The episode "Quarreler's Pass" implies that the two of them are really only able to get along due to Sprig and Polly's rather immature antics as they become awkward and desperate for some kind of conversation.

Humans[]

Anne is very close with her human friends and clearly cares deeply for them even when going through a "rough patch". She obviously loves her parents and hates it someone disrespects them.

Sasha Waybright[]

Sasha: "Anne what are you doing?!"
Anne: "What I should've done a long time ago, standing up to you!"
―Anne finally standing up to Sasha

Anne had known Sasha for a long time and it is implied through their conversation that much of Anne's personality and philosophy stems from her influence. Anne was determined to look for her when they were separated. However, it quickly became apparent through her description of her that she was unknowingly being bossed around and manipulated by her. Upon being reunited, Anne began to see Sasha's flaws and was forced to fight her to defend her friends. Despite this, Anne still wanted to reach out to her and help her and was crushed when they were once again separated by their differing allegiances. Anne has made it her mission to find Sasha and fix their relationship.

Marcy Wu[]

Wow, Marcy hasn't just changed, she's flourished; I've never seen her so happy.
―Anne amazed on how much Marcy has improved[src]

Marcy is Anne's second human friend. Unlike with Sasha, where it is implied that their relationship was toxic, Anne's relationship with Marcy is warmer. Anne was super protective of her due to her clumsiness and it is revealed that she was more concerned for her well-being because of Amphibia being filled with multiple dangers. However, Anne was relieved to see her friend doing well. Nevertheless, she still went out of her way to try and protect her, but learns to trust her. After Marcy learns about Anne and Sasha's fight, she and Anne both agree that it's time they made their own decisions and promise to find Sasha, as well as a way home, together. In "Scavenger Hunt", Anne is revealed to be somewhat jealous of Marcy's intelligence, but learns that she in turn is jealous of her social skills, bringing them closer together.

Mrs. Boonchuy[]

Sprig: "What's she like?"
Anne: "My mom? Um, kind... in her own way, but strict too. She wanted me to study more. Thought I goofed off too much. We didn't always see eye to eye. She annoyed me sometimes too. Like, in the kitchen, she'd always sing these goofy Thai love songs, and, man, was her singing bad. Woof! That woman was beyond tone-deaf. You know, the funny thing is, right now I would give anything just to hear her singing."
―Anne on her mother

Anne's relationship with her mother is constantly referenced. Much of Anne's family life at home is a mystery, but it is implied that she maintains a pretty healthy relationship with her parents despite the fact that she clearly is rebellious even at home. Her family runs a restaurant and learned the ins and outs of running one from them ("The font on these menus is way too small; Rookie mistake.") Earlier episodes implied that Anne disliked how strict her mother is and how out of sync her tastes are with hers. In "Lost in Newtopia", a flashback reveals that her mother did restrict her from trying certain foods due to her "California stomach" supposedly being incapable of processing such things. In "Hopping Mall", Anne went to great lengths to get her mom a present. She knows a lot about her mom and what she likes; butterflies, tea and antiques. At the end of the episode Anne finally admits that she misses her and her "tone-deaf" singing and wants nothing more than to be home with her.

Amphibia Citizens[]

One of the major arcs in the series is Anne's relationship with the town of Wartwood. At first everyone was either afraid of or despised her for being different. This did not stop her from trying to reach out or show friendliness towards everyone. By "Girl Time", everyone was at least comfortable with her presence to the point that she was treated to their commodities. In "Toad Tax", Anne was feeling down as everyone walked all over her. This did not stop her from defending them from the Toads who were ransacking their town when their taxes were not paid. Since then, their animosity disappeared because everyone in Wartwood now knows she is a friend and has become much more genial to Anne to the point that they look to her for protection such as in "Snow Day" and she was rewarded by the town in "Anne of the Year".

In season two, her relationship expands to people outside Wartwood, most notably Newtopia. In "Scavenger Hunt", Anne was able to easily make friends with random strangers and offer input on their personal lives while also openly accept their advice.

One-Eyed Wally[]

Anne: "A good friend once told me it doesn't matter what other people think of you."
Wally: "That's a good line. Would your friend mind if I used it?"
Anne: "It was you Wally."
―Anne and Wally becoming friends

Wally was the first Amphibian to see Anne; he mistook her for a monster a rally the citizens of Wartwood to go after her. After the misunderstanding was cleared up he still had a hard time accepting her until in "Toad Tax" when she showed in a small act of kindness, he finally saw her as a person, since then he has been much nicer and more respectful towards the human girl. Anne kept her distance from One-Eyed Wally almost by instinct. She found him annoying and unpleasant to be around. However, in "Wally and Anne", Anne began to see that he was a person deep inside with feelings and soon begin to find his happy-go-lucky attitude inspiring as it meant not caring about what others think. Anne learned that Wally actually comes from a wealthy family and saw how is double life was making him miserable she helped him by making his father see who really is and accepting him, which Wally is really grateful to her for.

Maddie Flour[]

While only having limited interaction through Sprig, Anne was put off by Maddie's behavior just like everyone else. She helped Sprig break up with her and showed no remorse for her actions. After getting cursed and help from Maddie, she became more comfortable around her.

Stumpy[]

Stumpy: "I've never seen this place so packed. What ― What's this weird feeling in me chest?"
Anne: "That is called hope. I think we might actually pull this off, dude."
―Anne giving Stumpy hope

Knowing how hard it is to run a restaurant from her parents she went through great lengths to help his restaurant get a good review. After she turned his restaurant into a success, Stumpy thanks Anne for helping him with his diner by telling her that her parents would be proud.

Mrs. Croaker[]

That woman is everything I want to be"
―Anne taking about Mrs. Croaker[src]

Like the rest of the Wartwood citizens it took a while for her to get use to Anne. After the human girl showed her kindness in "Toad Tax", Mrs. Croaker started being friendlier towards her. Anne likes her feistiness and craftiness.

Leopold Loggle[]

Anne finds his habit of beginning his statements with a positive then slowly transitioning into a negative annoying, but they still get along very well.

Tritonio Espada[]

You know what? Tritonio might have been a crook, but he was onto something. When I get home, I'm gonna give my teachers another chance.
―Anne on Tritonio and teachers[src]

Even though Tritonio Espada is a conman who tricked her, Sprig and Polly into helping him rob a train, he still made her realize teachers were tough on her because they saw her potential wanted her to succeed; this in turn inspired Anne to give teachers a chance and promised to be nicer to her teachers when she got home.

Mayor Toadstool[]

Mayor Toadstool took the longest of the Wartwood citizens to respect Anne. She was clearly disgusted by his greed and selfishness. However, in "Anne of the Year" he admitted even he was impressed by all she has done in Wartwood and that she deserved the frog of the year award. Since then Toadstool started to like Anne.

Captain Grime[]

The fierce toad warrior knew about her beforehand trough Sasha. He became her enemy when he captured the citizens of Wartwood, tried to execute Hop Pop and made her fight Sasha.

King Andrias[]

Anne met the ruler of Amphibia though Marcy in hopes he could help her get home. While Andrias is very cordial with Anne, he seems to be planning something behind her back.

Trivia[]

  • Anne is shown to be highly addicted to her phone, with Polly noting she never goes somewhere without her phone in "A Night at the Inn", and being more grateful to Wally for saving her phone than her life in "Wally and Anne". A brief comment of hers in "Taking Charge" suggests this addiction is due to her phone being the only link to her life back home.
    • On a related note, it is strongly implied that Anne is very responsible with the use of her phone, since she spent days in Amphibia with her phone still being at full battery until Hop Pop drained it all in the episode "Taking Charge".
  • She attends Saint James Middle School which seems to be a parochial school. Concept art for the character showed her wearing a Catholic school-style vest.
  • Anne Boonchuy is from California.
  • It is strongly implied in "Family Fishing Trip" that Anne likes to eat crab, as she said that the giant crab monster both scares her and makes her hungry, and later asked if anyone would like to go and kill the crab monsters, arguing that "that thing probably had a ton of meat."
  • Strangely enough, despite showing that she can get clean and has worn clean clothing and comb or slicked her hair on more than one occasion, her hair always seems to revert back to having leaves and sticks in it as if she has been dragged through the woods again. According to Matt Braly, this is done on purpose in order to reflect the fact that "[Anne] is out of her depth and a bit disoriented [in Amphibia]".[1]
    • In the Amphibiland pilot short, Anne is depicted with both of her shoes intact.
  • Anne was originally envisioned as being boring on earth before being reinvented by the crew. Her personality was loosely based on Pacifica Northwest from Gravity Falls and Matt Braly's grandmother when she was a little girl.
  • Matt Braly revealed on an AMA that Anne's design was slightly influenced by Pepper Ann, being a fan of the series itself.[2]
  • Her last name "Boonchuy" roughly translates to "one who encourages or performs good deeds". This fits her character as she attempts to help the people of Amphibia.
  • Anne has shown a number of interesting talents over the course of the series such as cooking, dancing, dunking, and sewing. It is implied that she learned some of these skills either through her family or her friends.
  • Some of Anne's quips such as her saving "Obvi", which is short for "Obviously", most likely came from Sasha, showing the influence that she has had on her.
  • In "Reunion", it is revealed that Anne used to hate frogs to the point that Sasha would make fun of her for it and try to gross her out.
  • According to Matt Braly, Anne reads manga, "[probably saw] anime", and watched The Lord of the Rings.[3] This is further supported in the episode "Trip to the Archives", where Anne shouts "Zoobooks and manga, here I come!".
  • As seen in "Quarreler's Pass" Anne apparently does not like to talk about her potential romantic life at home, implying that she is terrible at it.
